Grid edit - why only 1 track at a time!?

Hi,

Maybe I am missing something but is it possible to view all tracks in grid edit?

One track at a time is limiting cause if you have different drums sample on each track it would be nice to have a window which would show them all together.

The only other way around this that I can see is to record everything on 1 track, and then copy each drum sample onto its own track and delete the original.

or, you know, just keep all your drums on the same track so you can edit them together, just as you would your chopped sample or instrument programs...

surely that defeats the purpose of having the track mute function?

cause track mutes are not relevent to what i was originally asking. they become relevent when someone suggests having every type of drum hit on the one track. i see no point to that because if you are playing you need to be able to mute any track that you want to, no?

i want say BD on track 1, kick on track 2 etc etc but it would be nice to see all of the hits togather in grid edit, (rather than having to keep changing the track ID) it would make it easier to see how for instance your open hats are sitting in relation to closed etc (which i will have on different tracks!)

yes, grid edit defeats the purpose of having track mutes, because grid edit is its own track mute. the only exception is in live use when the mpc is the only performance tool, in which case you'd want to copy your tracks and selectively delete parts to isolate them. better yet just use the 10 outs, keep them all on the same track, and mute them selectively via software like ableton.

grid edit gives you the ability/visibility to actually sequence what you would track mute
sequencing in "mutes" in grid edit via deleting chunks. if you want something "muted" in a sequence, simply don't play it, or just delete those notes from your drum track.

in my opinion this is far better than having 8 identical copies of 1 sequence and relying on track mutes to create variety.

Plus if you track the beat out using the 4 + ST out's you dont need to mess with the track mute.

hmmm, i'm not understanding the reluctance to use track-mute here guys?! i am looking at this from a playing live point of view, once i have a sequence i am happy with. surely then i would start with most elements muted and then just add/remove them as the track progressed - is this not how most folks would play live??

reread the first paragraph of my last post, it addresses the live issue and gives a solution. as a sequence-based performance tool, ableton is a far more flexible host than the mpc.

the reluctance to use track mutes stems from, to be honest, my dislike of its use as a replacement for "a good honest day's work" in a non-live context

i see everyone's points here, but i totally agree with the original question/post. It seems sort of a natural progression that would be a nice time saver and add to the flexibility of the OS.

imagine being able to compare 2 tracks with differant variations, side by side.

cosign. it would nice to be able to compare tracks like that & still keep the separation for mute purposes. the only question is how to implement it in the interface? it could get confusing. maybe a VIEW ALL button in grid edit.
