This is always what I find lacking - BUTTONS!

Most big hardware MIDI controllers (eg Doepfer Drehbank) just have knobs, or just sliders,
when you almost always need lots of toggle and momentary buttons too.

By the way -
it has just struck me -
a commercial thingymabob that does this kind of thing is a "Jazz Mutant Lemur" -
it's a MIDI touch-screen gizmo.
But it costs $$thousands!

It appears one can do the same thing for about 1/10th of the price by getting a USB touchscreen thing and programming up a SysEx GUI for it in Max or Login or whatever?

If foge designs his own or if akai or another maker mass produces another MPC or drum sampler like this it would definitivly be the future of designs in the next 5 to 10 yrs.

Touchscreen build into a portable thin lightweight mpc or similar instrument. Incredible!!!! Download the parameters and additions wirelessly to update my unit.

I think foge works and multitouch technology is great most users would welcome and all in one unit with it as part of the controls in the coming future. Not all people mind you are interested in multitouch technology but the potential is tremendous. I say once again thanks for sharing foge and keep up the good work you are indeed a mpc pioneer showing the future of the mpcs.

The thing with that MIDIbox project is that it is run by an anarco-syndicalist collective of German eco-vegans who, if you politely ask them "sorry, but my soldering is rubbish, I'd never manage to build one of those myself - can I pay someone to make me one please?",
they all start spitting teeth and crying "UNBELIEVER!!!!" and give you a huge lecture about how you're an evil capitalist and should die. And no they won't build you one.

I find this rather tiresome. I'm a musician, not an electronics wizard, and I want a MIDIbox so I can make no music, not so I can become the world's greatest solderer.
(And since when did they go and mine the meltals and fabricate the components for all the stuff they make, anyway? F*cking cretins!)

Yea.. I've seen that in Action.... seen them literally tear somebody apart because they bought Midibox Sequencer on Ebay without knowing the issue.

I have a BCR2000 to get me by until then, but I'd definitely like to build a dedicated box ... and doing the Midibox thing is much easier then starting completely from scratch. I'm not the best sodderer but I guess I'll be getting better.

Nice work Forge.

I get the Logic environment thing but how do you design the layout of the Touchscreen itself? Does this require a particular software package? Is it bundled with the screen?

On the subject of hardware controllers I have a Novation Remote Zero SL. This has a good balance of Rotaries, Knobs, Faders and Buttons, it will also send Sysex commands and is easy to create maps with either the unit itself or the bundled software editor. Another plus of the SL series is the large LCD displays which many other controllers are lacking.

So far I have successfully created controller maps for Traktor Scratch, JoMox Drum Modules and my Waldorf Pulse+. However, these maps only use MIDI CCs, so far I have not programmed the Novation with Sysex.

My next project with the Novation is to design a map for my MPC4K, I will post results on the forum.
