^^ co-sign .. some of the dopest drum sounds can be produced with stuff laying around your house and a good ear for effects on those sounds .. or just spend the bread and buy GOOD equipment .. i make alot of drum sounds
from layering two or three different kicks from different modules .. or layered over a nice sampled kick ..

Anyways, you can use kits to make your own sounds with layering, or effects, EQ, etc....just like breaks. I don't see anything wrong with kits, even left as is...if they are dope and do the beat justice.
Lack of originality can be said about using breaks too, especially common breaks. It gets annoying hearing the same damn breaks being used sometimes...regardless what's done to them. Sht gets old son... Nowadays, most of the dopest breaks have already been found and used anyway....most beatmakers are re-treading an old beaten up path.
Layering kits with breaks helps to change some of the character of breaks, and vice versa, which is coooo
Also, if you use kits...chances are you can come with a cleaner sound. Not everyone wants vinyl hiss, clicks, pops, and dirt in their sound, or necessarily are that anal as to use breaks to satisfy the Jansport Jockeys and spend eons cleaning up the sounds if they are wanting to have commercial placement.
Lets be real...if you augment a kit...you have a better chance of coming up with an "original" sound than augmenting a classic break, for example. You might not satisfy the "purists", but they are close minded anyways and want everyone else to be as close minded and narrow thinking, so flowers 'em. Especially, since they probably are not even aware that some of their favorite albums had songs made with kits...
I use both breaks and kits...not afraid to admit it. I don't really care at the end of the day if the drums came from a break, a triton, motif, cd kit pack bought off the internet, tapping on the cone of a speaker, tapping on the record platter with the needle on it, beatboxing then chopping and filtering...filtering farts for basslines....just as long as it's dope.
