How do you thin your collection for a move?

just wondering if you have done it, what your method was...or advice?

I might just keep them all, but I've got like 8 or 9 crates and I'm sure I could thin it out by at least two..

of course, checking for doubles, but besides that?

is two crates going to make that much difference to a move? maybe keep it all.

I've been tempted to thin pre-move as well. It didn't make a huge difference in the move because I only offloaded about a half crate. Still, in my digging, I've picked up a lot of garage sale crates, and hand me down crates, and 1$ records from flea markets and shit... and there are some things there that I know I will just never spin, never sample from... ya know, fireside sing-a-long with Mitch and $h!t like this... Even if it doesn't make a big diff in moving, it's nice to simplify from time to time by getting rid of some baggage.

Sup Mike, I've been thinning for about a month now for a move coming in a couple weeks. Here's my method: Whenever I got a few hours I grab about 20-30 records. I start going through the records real quick and if I hear something dope I make note and keep going, if it's got a couple dope samples in the record it goes in the keep pile, if it's only got one dope sample I record it to the computer for later and throw it in the sell pile. I try not hold records for too long anyway, I'm more about selling them or trading them after sampling then letting them take up space.

What rhythmonster says is good advice. Alternatively, I like to turn sh*te records I'm not gonna keep into interesting ashtrays (put them in the oven over a bowl for a couple of minutes and they bend up nicely!).

I'm dreading my next move.,,,,naaw seriously i have had this collection build up for the last 31yrs, all i can say is make sure you cover the crates and keep them out of the sun,try to move in the morning when the sun is not so strong or at night .use boxes with flaps or lids,this is usually the first thing i move my collection everything else comes second, I've used a 29ft moving truck to move all this , my collection has doubled in size so then maybe I'm not the one to be giving advise, GOOD LUCK, SAVE THE VINYL

You dont. Bring it all with you. Leave a couch, a few chairs, hell you could leave people behind but the vinyl must go with you....

I don't thin...I call up a few extra buddies of mine to bring crates and help haul vinyl for a day...

That's the first thing I move. I love it when getting a new place, first move all the vinyl and the handy trax and then crack open the beer cans and start listening!

i started thinkin bout this a couple days ago. it depends how far you want to move; as for me i'm going from one end of the country to the other

what i'm gonna do is sell every record that you can basically get anywhere else and keep only the regional or harder to find stuff. i don't imagine dollar records changing TOO much in a move.

I moved about 6-7 months ago. I started thinning out the collection before the move, while packing, and while putting my stuff away in the new place.

I started by getting rid of stuff that I knew was useless. Then I made piles of stuff that was definite keepers, and stuff that I was sketchy about.

The stuff I was sketchy about, I actually listened to...and I kept some stuff I thought I could sample or just liked...and turfed the wackness.

There is still wack records in my collection but not a lot. It was an ongoing process.

Going through records while packing and un-packing is good, cause you gotta sort and go through those records anyways.

thx for the advice yall, I'm contemplating a move from SC to Oregon and I'm trying to keep it all in one truckload with no U-Haul, I'm selling almost all I own minus the music gear

yeah this was brought up on a record site. the majority of the people agreed to let go whatever doesnt have any value to you or records you're certain you'll be able to find again. But as most have said in this post, 2 crates aint that much more to be carrying.

with that said, i don't need to move, but i definitely need to purge a fat stack of records.
