I received my MPC 1000 earlier this week from a store on EBay. This is my first real piece of production equipment (I've had controllers and different things of that nature). Number one, I'm an idiot when it comes to setting up equipment, I don't know what cables are needed and I don't know the proper terminology for anything.

When I first got it a guy at radio shack pointed me to some cables that are Phono plug to qtr in mono plug, I got both of those separate, hooked them to my monitors and no sound. Today I went back and got 2 separate qtr. inch stereo phone plugs and still no sound. Then I hooked a headphone adapter to my headphones and popped it in, still no sound.

All I do is power it up and when the default sequence comes up I click play...should I be digging deeper to get some sort of sound or should music start playing right then?

I'm going insane right now. I can post a photo of the back of my monitors if that can help at all.

I hate saying this, but did you read the manual at all b4 posting this.

There are no sounds preloaded in the MPC. You will have to load sounds from the CF card (If you have one).... If you got a new MPC, it came with an Akai CF card with basic sounds on it...

Read the manual, and then come back and ask questions if that does not at least get you going..... I started just like you, but I read the manual 3 times b4 I asked anyone anything about the manual. I have had my MPC since Nov 07 and I still ref the manual and also the tutorial books I purchased from this site.

Youtube can also be helpful.... But everything will need legwork from your end....

We are here to HELP, but in order to help you, you must first be doing something on your own to need help.

I've been reading the manual at work, about half way though it and been watching a few youtube videos.

In my manual it said something along the lines of when I boot it for the first time I can press play and hear the default sequences unless I read it wrong.

I ended up just hooking up the usb and throwing on some old sample I had and I finally got sound.

Is this a new MPC or a used one?

I am assuming that the autoload has been disabled. So you will have to follow the instructions on loading programs/samples..... You will need to master this sooner or later.
