Trying to go ADAT 8 out in to Protools

Can anyone help here? I trying to go digital 8 outs using the ADAT option on the MPC 4000. Does anyone know how to do the setup in the 4000 or in the protools software. I am having a bit of trouble getting any audio within protools using ADAT.

You need to have the proper Pro Tools interface that has the lightpipe option. The software will show you the inputs that are available...Next, select the ADAT input as your recording option.

On the MPC make sure to select the corresponding output. 1/2,3/4,5/6,7/8

Thanks guys. I got some sound going into protools now. Im getting a lot of poping though and I am not even close to clipping out. What would cause this? Also since it is ADAT. How would I control the vloume. I would like to get the MPC as close to clipping as possible. The fader is already almost all the way up.

check the master level in global mode

Also, check the wordclock synching. Make sure the MPC is a wordclock slave and PT is the master clock. Typically, wordclock can be sent thru the digital i/o. But in some cases, you may need to connect the slave wordclock input to the master wordclock output via BNC cable.

Wordclock sync is way different than MTC/SMPTE/Midi Clock. Wordclock sync only applies digital audio flow between machines. In a digital enviroment, you need to have one wordclock generator telling the other digital signals when to send/recieve digital signals between each other. Most digital machines have a wordclock sync option...If all machines are connected to each other, than only one clock can be set to master. Typically, you set the most stable clock as the master. Better yet, invest into wordclock generator; I have a Lucid GenX that sends wordclock sync to my O2R, HD24, Pro Tools, Motu 828mkII, and Finalizer Plus...My resolution and imaging is hella better and I don't have any digital pos and clicks.

Most important, wordclock has nothing to do with sequencing. I hope I was clear explaining a detailed issue.

Mpire45, I am definitly understanding you and learning a lot too. Now I think I know why my 400 is popping while using the digital ADAT cord. It must have something to dowith the word clock your talking about. Im guessing I need to set either Protools or the 4000 to be the master. Do you have a suggestion. Should I or do I need the GynX thing you were talking about. since I am also using one source of ADAT and thats my MPC 4000?
Im also curious to why you are using an Motu MK2. Can you use that with Protools software. I still have my Motu MK3. I made the swith to the 002 becasue I was having hard times configuring my set-up and thaught it would be better to go with Digidisgn since thats what most people use anyone. That way I could converse with others and colaborate with other artist in my area.
Do you think it would be more simple to just use analog and and forget ADAT. Im so eager to record and so are my vocalist. Every week they ask me "have you gotten the studio together" and I have to tell them I am still working on it. I would love your opinion. YOU seem to be more knowledgable than me. Thanks

Cool, I'm glad you understand. With your setup, I would set Pro Tools as the master and the 4000 as the slave. For now, you won't need an external wordclock generator...But, you will need one once you start using more digital equipment and interfacing them all via digital i/o.

About the 828mkII, I use it with Digital Performer/Cubase SX/Cool Edit/ProTools LE/Audio Desk. I like it because it has a firewire interface which allows me to use it with my Mac G4, G4 Powerbook, and my PC. It also has a wordclock i/o, smpte i/o, adat sync, adat lightpipe, analog i/o, and midi i/o. Those features allow me to interface with virtually anything AND I can take it on the road with me.

About going digital or analog....I would go analog if I wanted to interface with analog processors (my particular method...I love my tube mic pres and channel strips...especially Joe Meeks!). I would go digital if I wanted to get a direct transfer of my signal...Or use a combo of both; I do that often. The 4000 and ProTools should offer you alot of flexibility to record hits.
