Hey elmacaco, got a Question

Can you tell me something? Is it worth it to run my sp303 thru my 60??If so, can you tell me how to do it? maybe step by step(if you dont mind?). I love the sp303, but the sequencer is doodoo. And I love working with the 60 by itself, it's so easy, fun etc.. But I've been hearing some talk of running external samplers thru the 60. You see, I got the sp303 first, wised up and got the 60mk2(after research). The sp303 has the worst sequencer. Anyway, I know you know your sh*T, get at me.

ok, plug one of the MPC's Midi outs into the Midi in on the SP 303. Hook up the 303 audio outs to a mixer, set a midi track to midi 1x (x being whatever midi output you used for the 303) and sequence away.

Do you want to use the 303's effects on MOC samples, or do you just want to sequence the 303 from the 60 (which is what I would do)

Depending on how you have your MPC set up, I will recommend something different.

So, do you have the 8 outs hooked up? or do you listen through the main outs? Do you have a mixer? Do you have other gear running through the mixer or off the MPC that you want to use the 303 effects on?

I have a super ideal set up in mind, but I won't type it if it doesn't apply.

Also, do you have OS 3.10 ?

man, thanks, im gonna print all this. ok, I have two turntables and a mixer, the mixer goes thru a mackie 1202 that I have. Ok, when you say OS 310, (God I feel stupid) what do you mean? As far as sampling time etc.. I have the 8 outs, which one guy said I should start doing(using the 8 outs) But it seems like alot of work. I like the effects on the 303, like the sound(especially the bass) I want to basically use the 60 stricltly as a sequencer to the 303. Should I do this? is it worth it??? I mean, does an external sampler , going thru the 60 present something special? Like lets say the s950/60 ala premier?
I basically use the mackie to hook it all up(the amp, mixer.etc) I have midi cables. Im just having a hard time grasping the whole "sample a beat on the 303, sequence it thru the 60) I understand the concept of midi, I know you cant save the sound in the 60.

Do you seriously think this is worth it. I mean, dam, I love the 303, and I lust the 60, it seems to me it would be noice to mix the two...ta dig? Or am I just nuts

All you need to do is hook up the midi out of the MPC to the midi in of the 303. and plug the outputs of the 303 into a mixer.

It's not stupid, it is a good idea.

By OS 3.10 I mean the new roger Linn OS for the MPC 60, when you start it up, what system is it running (it should say on the screen as soon as you turn it on.

elmacaco, it says 2.12. I am thinking of going to forat , upgrade to a 3000. Anyway, after the midi chords are in, and the sp is ran thru the mackie, I can sample sounds on the sp, and the 60 will read the sample? do i have to assign the sp to a pad?

You assign the 303 cto a midi channel, then when you select that channel on a track, all pads control the 303 (well, up to however many sample you can load in the 303, 32 IIRC) then on other tracks you use the 60 samples. the 303 samples never leave the machine, you control it through midi.

You do understand midi right? or is it time for a quiz?

elmacaco. what is your take on the 1000? I read about it in scratch magazine. How does it size up vs. the 60?

Best to worst is purely subjective, in what sense? I can only state my preference. I love the 60, and I doubt the 3000 would satisfy me as much because I love 12 bit, and the 60 is bigger and so uses the ergonomic space better than the rest (except perhaps the 4000, but I never got that deep into the 4000 to compare ergonamics, just straight features. I don't want an all in one unit, so it wouldn't be at the top of my list.

The 1000 had a lot of promise, I really wanted it when the first pictures appeared, since they had the pads on the left and such. But it is apparent that the software short comings are yet to be dealt with.

Point is, they are all good machines, I don't think one will make better music than another, it just becomes about how you want to work, what you need to realize your vision, and the best way to accomplish it. I don't want an all in one unit, I would rather hve different unit specialized in hat they do best. Even when I loop in my rack samplers that can loop, I never do, I just sequence them. It's not Like I'm rolling in dough either, it has taken me a long time to realize what I need and to get it. but that way I learn each piece and can accomplish what I want.

Between the 60, the sp 303, and the sp 12, you have a killer combo that is limitless as far as musical potential. Don't worry about what is best and get on with juicing your gear for all its worth.

One more thing. I've been listening to primo alot, been thinking more about chopping samples. I just love how he chops up his sh*t. I've been studying his style, dope! obviously.
I want to start chopping more and stop looping straight samples, no matter what.
