I Think My New 2500 Might Have Some Issues

So I just picked up a used 2500 from Guitar Center. It completely mint, still had the plastic on the screen. Has all the options, DVD, 128mb, 120GB etc. And like every other time I have had a far away GC storee ship me something it shows up poorly packaged with issues.

In the Trim mode all of the pads will trigger whatever sample I have selected except the second pad from the top. It just produces a click like sound. The pad appears to work. I can load a program and trigger the sample in just about every other screen, just not the trim screen.

Also, and tell me if I'm wrong, I assumed that like the 2000XL, when you chop shop a sample and dial through the regions, each pad will play the same sound. WHen I chopped a sample and hit each pad some of them played other regions than the one I had selected.


I only messed with the machine for about an hour today and my first impressions are not great. Little glitchy shit like the pads triggering seemingly random things or the one not triggering at all. I couldn't figure out why it would not let me adjust the end point of a sample fully with the slider. It would only go back to a certain point and stop. The jog wheel is slow as hell in Trim mode. Hopefully you can adjust the sensitivity of the wheel or something because where it's at right now is about useless. I'm spinning the wheel like mad and the increments are just creeping by. I can spin my XL wheel so fast that fine editing of start and end points is a breeze. In Trim mode on my XL the pads default to mono which is helpful when fine tuning start points as it retriggers each time you hit it. The 2500 appears to default to note off so I have to keep my finger on the pad for it to play through. This was really annoying and I couldn't figure out hjow to change the setting. Lot's of little stupid stuff.

I was hoping to be really impressed by the 2500. I know my XL inside out and thought the 2500 would be more of a natural transition, but I was just bumbling along trying to figure out basic features.

I've had the opportunity to use just about every MPC with the exception of the 1000/2500 and the 500, and I was able to sit down with no manual and make beats. Maybe I need to update the OS? Is there some kind of factory reset I need to do? Or is it just that the 2500 is so advanced that I really need a manual to perform basic stuff like edit a sample?

I'd make sure you got the newest OS and read the manual. I played with one in a store yesterday and it didn't have the note off issue in the trim screen you mentioned.

Look up in the manual about what the top row of pads actually do in Trim Mode. They have distinct functions that are also noted above each Pad, unlike the XL. For example the second Pad plays "To" the selected Start point, meaning this is usually just a tiny blip of sound.

You have to set the cursor to a higher increment by holding Shift. No acceleration on the 2500 jog wheel.

I must say, I have used and are still using a 2000XL as well, and found the 2500 real easy and intuitive to use, even without the manual. I think I'd have a much harder time with a 60 or 3000.

they're just different machines from different times. jumping from a pc to a mac its like... they do the same stuff but def differences. just keep trying to get used to the switch.

reset the machine to the defaults, then go from there
