I hear alot about the ASR-10, but what other keyboards do y'all use to sample sounds? I don't understand why there is no talk of units like the Triton and Fantom to sample...

They have good samplers built in, but most people talk about samplers that are dedicated samplers, a sampling synthesizer like a triton does the job but most people use them for the internal sounds and use a dedicated sampler to do their sampling.

okay, i feel u...with that being said couldn't u really just use your MPC to sample without worrying about anything else? i kinda want a triton cuz it does have some nice onboard instruments but if i can get one that samples, that will work too because it has more RAM than a 2k or a ASR-10

Well, why not just sample a Triton then? Time-consuming, I'm sure, but definitely tailored to your liking from the jump. I considered a rackmount of the Triton, but then started collecting sounds from a Triton my man had. Then again, the Triton has some special features that go well with composing, so I guess you just have to know what you need.

It also just depends on your preference. A friend of mine has a Motif and he uses the sampler in it. The samples sound good and clean, but maybe a little too clean for my liking. I just like the way the ASR sounds. I still like the way the MPC sounds, but there are distinct differences in the sound. Newer samplers like the Triton and Motif are also 24 bit samplers whereas the ASR is 16 and the MPC 2K s also. Basically whatever meets your needs. If you already have a cool sampler you can always multi-sampe a friend's board or sound module. That's what I do.

Peace,
D. James

but like the man said, using a triton or whatever means that you get all the "performance" features of that keybaord. Be that arps, modulations, fx etc...

good lookin out folks...i think i might holla at the triton because i play the piano so i'd like to incorporate that into my music...i'll mess around and drop some jazz ish...

The Triton is excellent for Jazz music, coincidentally. Maybe moreso than other genres.

The triton sounds like shit though. It's fine on its own, but when you hear it in a live situation with other instruments, it just straight blows!! and it glitches on stage like yo mama on da rag. I know tlots of live sound engineers here, and they all say they have never experienced a more glitchy machine on stage, it always stops the show and creates dead air time.

What are you trying to accomplish?

yo, i own a triton studio...........for a while i was just doing all my sampling on the mpc, drums, bass, and samples. It would work very well, and i would only use my triton for synth sounds, or bass sounds. I would end up making either all sample beats on the mpc, or all synth beats on the triton.

WEll, i moved, and rearranged my setup. I also dont have an effects card in my mpc, and wanted to tweak my samples more i.e. filter and eq. ANyways, i started using my triton to sample. Id set up a drum program in the mpc, and maybe a bass program; layout all my drums and bass in the mpc(and sample those in the mpc) and my instrument samples i would sample and work with in the triton. Then i control the triton from the mpc. NOW i do all my beats with the drums and bass on the mpc, and my instrument samples on the triton....i hardly use the triton synth sounds, because i actully use the effects and filters to make my own with samples.

I have to say my samples sound way better because i can tweak them more. I use to think that the mpc was a better sampler because i could use it faster, but now the triton is working better. I can apply tons of effects, eq, parametric eq then resample it...and apply more. Ive even tweaked it then sampled it back into the mpc, so i can get everything in one spot.

basically i can get rid of that sample hiss, and clean it up nicely. i can also get some cool effects with reverbs, and delays. Just today i took a small string sound, and turned it into a synth pad, sounds like some mobb deep shit. anyways, the triton sampler is way better than any other when it comes to using it to create some synth sound, or to clean it up....plus i can combine my samples with internal sounds. Yeah a dedicated samplers are good, but sound creation wise the triton is awesome and easy to get creative with it.

my favorite feature on the triton is the resample featrue and the effects. I have a hard drive on my triton studio so i can save a million samples and load em up fast. THe effects can make any sample sound cool....i mean really i can sample anything that you wouldnt normally use on the mpc, and flip it into an original sound.....apply some eq to bring certain sounds out, then apply some delay, and maybe a filter or something-make the sound of 'air' into a sound ya know.

I totally agree that i dont like just "all triton" beats, unless it is put together well, and all the sounds are tweaked good. I an spot an "all triton" beat a mile away, anyways, thats besides the point because alot of producers do it and can make it sound good.

Personally i think the triton combine with some intelligent sampling, and sampling like it is done on the mpc, is the next hottest thing, that i dont think alot of people do. I dont think triton owners take full advantage of all its features, especially when it comes to sampling and combining those samples with synthesis. ALot of triton owners are not like mpc owners.....they dont get into the machine the same way if you know what i mean. they just use it for its presets, maybe a little creation, but thats it...or if they sample with it, they just chop it up and play the chops on the keys. THEY NEED TO get cretive like mpc users do, like finding all the ins and outs to get around its limitations take it to the next level.

Ayo cyrus,

I've been experimenting the same way witih my triton and mpc and your right, if you know what your doing, it works well...you just have to be creative

yo elmacaco, i am really just trying to figure out what kinda board i want and i like to sample shit because i can take it then flip it into something crazy...i feel cyrus on the application of effects on sounds...anybody can rock a preset sound, but effects can make your sounds original and ultimately that's what i'm tryin to get at...originality is what i'm about, so whatever i can use to get that is real...i'll make a beat off a recorded sound of me beating on a desk if it sounds hot, feel me? :? anyway all this is cool, basically wanted to know what people that had the equipment thought, not just what the manufacturer says...

hmm, presets through effects is a shortcut in my book, I like full programability.

As far as I am concerned the best keyboard for original sounds is still the ASR 10. You can do sampling, subtractive synthesis, loop based rompler sounds, and wavetable synthesis with amazing options. No other sampler matches it period.

I kinda wish I had one, but I have 3 samplers and I don't need a fourth unless it's portable.
