Software is amazing! All hardware has limitations, and software has for the most part eliminated the most common limitations of hardware.
being a hardware guy, you know how companys do- they release a scaled down model, a full feature model, and then an upgrade model. Well, software eliminates that as the company will release one version which will do everything.
Polyphony used to be a major issue for producers, and sometimes still is for those who have not migrated to a digital studio. Reason offers a Polyphony of 99 on it's synths! Compare that to the thousands of monophonic synths still used today.
Software is cheaper and often easier to program(synths)
It takes NO space from your workstation, using less electricity- can be upgraded when applicable and you never have to worry about warranty or repairs as you just have to reinstall the application.
Software is the way to go in my opinion, while hardware is still fun to bang out beats and melodies on- you'll eventually need your PC to hack and master your tracks.. why not use your resources and download a Soft Synth?
For awhile I was anti-hardware and mainly worked worked w/ my software/sample collection for composing, but sometimes my wife needs the PC, and I like to carry my gear to other places that why I bought several samplers. Most of my other hardware is strictly sound modules for samplers, and to feed into Multi-tracking apps using midi messages from the software or other hardware.
Download a demo of Pro53,FM7, Traktor DJ, Reason, Rebirth
Reason however is beyond any other application to date (imo)
Alot of producers are using it for the massive ways to work with it.
You have the freedom to route signals anyway you want them, make sounds from scratch, the Redrum drum module is just like a Korg Es-1, and the the NN-XT is one hell of a sampler! It's amazing the things that Reason will allow you to do.
When I first started using reason I would do this..
I would download a commercial midi file
DR.DRE
I would mute the drums and add instruments for the synths parts and just start chopping it up.
I would then chop up the acapella's and load them into NNXT/or REX.
anyway- the point is, hardware will limit your production, while software will take you into areas you've never been able to imagine before.
