QUANTIZE STRENGTH

let's talk about quantize strength. this is in a lot of DAWs and is an extremely powerful TC function. (it's not in jjos, i just want to talk about it)

when we record, we have the option to use TIME CORRECT. we also have the option to record with TC OFF. both have its obvious perks. TC OFF is best for capturing exactly what you played back, but this can be unforgiving. TIME CORRECT, on the other hand, "forgiving" but in a way that (even with applications of swing) snaps your recorded notes onto a stiff grid.

QUANTIZE STRENGTH allows a compromise - a middle ground between a TC OFF recording and the same TIME CORRECTED recording.

technical example:

*TIME CORRECT 1/8, 62% swing and 100% QUANTIZE STRENGTH snaps the recording to 1/8, 62% swing. this is what happens now.

*TIME CORRECT 1/8, 62% swing and 0% QUANTIZE STRENGTH leaves the recording as is - a pure TC OFF recording.

*TIME CORRECT 1/8, 62% swing and 50% QUANTIZE STRENGTH moves the recorded notes HALFWAY in between where the item was recorded and where the TC value WANTS it to be.

metaphorical example:

consider QUANTIZE STRENGTH + TC as an ELECTROMAGNET where you can consider the force with which it changes your data.

this is not a feature that exists in the jjos. it's in many DAWs and some other sequencers.

in my opinion it's very valuable.

Im not sure but I think I used to have this feature on my asrx pro but its been a while

i'd definitely like to see this added to JJ OS, but i'd also like to see a RANDOMIZE option as part of it.

using the RANDOMIZE option would bump each note event in a random direction (earlier or later) by the specified 'strength'. you could give them a little nudge or a huge smack that would knock a note all the way into a different bar. sounds chaotic but sometimes you can get really interesting rhythms by doing stuff like this, something that sounds cool but that you never would have thought to play yourself if you were just banging the beats out by hand.

what would really be freaky is if you could bump the notes not just earlier or later but also UP and DOWN in the grid! so that the note would be in roughly (or exactly) the same place timewise but would now be playing on a completely different pad, thus triggering a different sound. you could call it GRID BOUNCE or something.

Is that something you think can even be implemented on the 1000 ?

sure, it could be, if only as an offline application

We definitely need this feature. Back when I used my Motif ES as my sequencer, I would use this feature 90% of the time and it saved me a lot of work and time. i could play out drums or melodies and if I felt like they needed a little tightening up, I would choose my desired quantize strengh and that was it. The performance would tighten up slightly but still have that live feel, I never needed to re-play something unless I was way off. The first day I used my MPC I immediately noticed the quantize strength feature was missing. MPC's are suppose to be the sh!# when it comes to sequencing and drum programing (and sampling), they are known for increasing workflow, I don't understand why we don't have this feature. To me it's a no brainer, other hardware/software have it right out the box. I get that the older models don't have it but these newer ones should. It's like if you were to buy a brand new BMW or whatever and you're driving along and decide to put on the cruise control and realize... there is no cruise control, WTF! This is not JJ's fault or anything, Akai should have had the feature from the jump but I do think JJ should have got this on OS1, the free OS even, it should be standard. Alright I'm done rambling, I'm gonna go shift some notes manually.

i feel the same way. this is essential to a sequencer in 2008.

I love doin as much as I can in the MP.......As much as it'll let me.........I used to wrestle with my DAW and the Quantize alot , prolly cause I hardly use the quantize in the MP.

Still poundin away on 3.08.....I gotta be one of the first people to have that program and still use it.........Is there a TC offset in OS1 or Os2 , or was it just my imagination?

It would be nice if implementing this feature would be possible. But I doubt, that the 1k has that lot calculating power. Btw. does any of the MPC models have that? I don't know if the 4k has that or not, but if it hasn't got that, I really doubt that it's possible

there's not a lot of calculation involved. it's a very simple mathematical equation: X recording +/- (Y time correct value times Z %). the mpc does more when it plays back any of the songs i've written in the last month.

if this is an offline thing, we'd be even more sure it could handle it.

That is why i still love my little yamaha qy70, even for todays standards its pretty damm tight
