Just replaced Rotary Encoder (jog wheel)

And i must say it was a b----. I have/had very little soldering experience and last night decided to undertake fixing my Jog Wheel. It was pretty tough but just a few tips.

1. buy desoldering braid! (it works like fking magic and eats the old solder up easily).

2. Patience because the jog wheel is soldered on a board so you dont want to melt the board or cause burn marks to appear. (i wasnt 100% perfect but i didnt do immense damage)

3. Fking fix it on a table or someplace you can sit. ( i dont have a table so i had to do it on the floor and it was pretty tough).

4. Try to do it by taking the entire board out. (the board is hooked up to two main points one hooks up to near the rec/volume controls easy to take out, the second hook up was a mofo and i couldnt get to it because the expansion 8 outs board was blocking it) to get to the second connection you have to take the bottom panel off. but i had enough slack that i could just flip the board the jog wheel was connected to on to the pads and fix it that way.


5. resolder carefully, try to take as much old solder off it makes the jog wheel much easier to take off and finally careful when resoldering the new jog wheel, i think i got really lucky on this as the new solder somehow stayed prefectly in the same boundaries where the old solder was.

Hi, It would appear there are a few people on here who think this is a piss-easy task. Well, maybe Im slow, but Im finding this complicated.

Im currently having the same problem with my 2000XL and having trouble removing the orange board UNDER the faceplate to access the soldered part of the rotary encoder.
What I am having to do at the moment is unscrew 5 of the screws on the orange board and lift it vertically up; and then attempted to desolder, couldnt get good enough contact to feel comfortable with continuing. So I have left it for now.

I have to say as well, the spring loaded solder sucker is a piece of shit, too much recoil means no control.

Am I better off with desoldering braid?

Can anyone detail a process that is idiotproof for the 2000XL rotary encoder replacement? Possibly with pictures?

Also, has anyone taken their MP for repair to solve this problem, and if so how much did it run you?

man if i had an xl layin around i would do it and film it for you guys just to do it. shits mad easy son. i have done 3 of them already. but i got mad solder skilz too. also i keep a desolder braid around but i almost always use a solder sucker. but its not the spring loaded typpe. it looks more like a snot sucker.

For me, desolder braids are less of a hassle for a cleaner desoldering. But I still got my blue radio shack solder sucker.

i used the braids as well they worked better

Riiiiight... So can anyone actually help me out?

I want to know how I can get the orange board to flip over so I can solder/de solder comfortably.... Right now it seems like its too difficult for me to be doing it right, I have only managed to get it loose enough so I can lift it up so that it can be held in a Vertical position, I want to know whether I can flip it most of the way over to get to the PCB side easier.

Any takers....?? Please??

man bro... if you've never soldered before then you shouldn't start out on your MPC.
If you solder some connections that shouldn't be soldered together, you could fry your sh!t.

But today I replacedmy fader, and I got the board upside down by putting it on a towel i had folded a few times and then put down on the pads.
