Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Filtering...

I want to know how to filter a sample for the low end bass throughout the whole entire beat, is it possible to do this before or after the beat is finished or even both?

One problem with this current beat i just made is that the beat is finished and I have the sample chopped up into 16 pieces is it to late to filter for low end bass at that point?


I know how to filter individual "sounds".


Take it easy on me i just got this 2000xl less than 2 weeks ago...

if you just want to play the bass exactly how it is in your chops then the easiest way is after ur done makin the beat, go to programs

go to where your samples are, hit open window on the program name and hit copy then name the new program bass or soemthin

delete all the samples (drums ect) exept for the samples, now filter all them down with aobut 20 on the filter and 10 on resinance.

now just copy your sample trak to a new trak and switch the program to the bass program.

i'm new to sampling, is it a good idea to apply filter to sampled sounds/ instruments to make it sound better, or do people mainly do it on basslines?

I finally have succumbed to the fact that i need a turntable to sample (another expense!) but looking forward to it, i avoided sampling for some reason and now realise it is the best fun.

also - real amateur question - how do i get a loop which i have sampled on my computer and loaded into the mpc to be spread on the 16 pads? didnt see it in the manual, or do i have to sample into the mpc directly to spread it on 16 pads?

oh ok, i thought the 16 levels key only was for velocity and note variation, filter, attack.

I just read the manual page again, it doesnt mention chopping the the sample over 16 pads ( eg - to automatically chop a 4 bar sample over the 16 pads)

u know on those youtube vids u see guys quickly tapping the 16 pads cos the sample is sequentially chopped over the 16 pads? instead of doing that, ive been manually chopping the sample into 16 individual parts in software then loading it onto the mpc and it is extremely tedious.

usually if the melody has a bass line you can copy the sound(s) and apply filters to the copied sounds, then layer those on another track.

I think the youtube producers have everthing pre-chopped prior to videotaping... I could be wrong tho. I've never really had the edit -> zone function work for me, I've always done it manually.

cool thanks. yeah pre-chopping into 16 pieces can be a pain in the ASS!

That's another reason why I've said in the past that those videos leave more questions asked than they actually answer.

haha you are right.

For a second i thought u could pre-load a .wav sample from the pc and the mpc would automatically chop it into 16 parts. I'm assuming that when u sample directly into the mpc from vinyl, etc it has the option to chop it into 16 parts automatically (my turntable will be bought in 2 months so i will find out before then if this is true).

You sample into the mpc, it saves that samples 1 wav, no autochop on sampling in.

How to sample and what you can do to chop your samples is all spelled out in the manual.

16 chops, u should check zone slice function in the manual.
16 levels, not the same function. check that too.

for fun hit OPEN WINDOW on everything you highlight.

sick thanks, yeah i read the manual heaps but skipped over sampling section cos havent done any sampling yet.

props on ur help u always give out helpful info.

ps- i read ur other post about mute groups i read pg 126 of the manual.

I want to be able to hit any of the 16 pads and when i hit a new pad i want the previous sound to stop. Do i have to individually assign all 15 pads to be muted via mute assign for each pad (eg- do this each of the 16 pads or is there a general setting to turn on)? how many pads can I mute assign per pad?

(I dont think this is answered in the manual, and my mpc has been confiscated until i finish exams in three weeks cos otherwise i will fail...so i cant check!) it hurts i cant use my mpc!!!!!!!!!!!
