NO! that will make things worse! Distortion is caused by a mismatch of electrical levels (which are controlled by the gain). Compression reduces the dynamic range of a signal, and whilst may make a signal louder on average, it doesnt increase the peak level which causes clip distortion (unless you crank the makeup gain which is obviously the same as any other type of gain).
Can you post some samples: the sample itself, and a recording of it distorting and exactly what is plugged where etc.
