MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

Am just curious to know if the 5000 has an in-built Fan to cool the powersupply? And if so, is it loud?
Also, have Akai used the quiet/silent type hard disk in the 5000, and if no, can u change it to ANY drive you like?

I ask because i HATE noise in the studio, and i eventually want to replace my (noisy) EMU E4 sampler with the 5000.
My friend has an MV 8800. Its a good machine. But the fan is abit loud..

Thanks
U3

Nah, I doubt it. And definitely not like the 4k, which does have one.

Can you be clear, is your drive spinning up just when loading or saving or are you getting spin-up at other times when it shouldn't? - My Hard Drive DOES spin up randomly for no reason sometimes, even when the 5K is powered on but not being used - it can sometimes make a bit of noise - not bad but I sometimes wonder what the drive is doing when it does this - can last for 15-20mins then it stops itself. Or if I access the HDD to browse files it immediately stops.

I'd like to guage if they all do this or only certain ones.

I know that JJ added extra control into XL to supress any unnecessary disk access/noise, except for load/save - very smart IMO. - Cheers :)

hard drives get louder the older they get.

you wanna stop that from happening.... see if you can get a solid state drive in the thing. You will be trading the noise for less space and more money.

It's not making much noise at all, but I'm able to feel the drive vibrating while tweeking q-links. I guess I'll get used to it after a while. It's the type of vibration you only really notice when you think about it. Just wondering since the 4k gave you the spin down option. Should be a software controllable feature, no?

Thanks,

D

well seeming that the hardware is all controlled by software in one form or another.... I would say yes. Can the 5k's hardware management be altered... I doubt it, and I doubt they would bother implementing that ability for the few people who think a hard drive is too loud. Maybe music is not your thing since it makes noise.

Nah, I'm not complaining about the drive noise. Just wondering if you guys are feeling the drive vibrate thru the q links & faceplate.

well you can get hard drive suspension kits.. some laptops have them such as that .. panasonic (i believe it is) has one for a sort of shock resistance. You know the little laptop thay use in industrial places. you can either get the solid state in it or the ordinary HDD with the suspension.

Update - I removed my 5K hard drive today, connected it physically to my PC, did a low-level format.

Now it's back in the 5K with all of my sample library reloaded and it's not making excessive noise as it was before. I installed a new E/IDE cable also because my other connector had come a bit loose.

Quiet as a mouse now.
