4 years ago today....

...was when I bought my MPC1000 brand new.
I've been through hell and back with it, spent alot of money between upgrades, replacement parts, cosmetic parts, JJ OS, etc., and I'm glad that I still have it.

So what's the point of this topic?
The answer to that (aside from celebrating 4 years) is that in all this time, I've seen this machine go from being dissapointing to being one of the best MPCs ever.

I would've never thought back in 2004 that we would have many things that weren't available for this machine (as listed below):

Blue Box
HDM-10 adaptor & hard drive
Black housing kit
JJ OS
Improved pad design
Blue, red, and white LCD screens
Wood sides

For those still using the 1000, it's good to see how we came a long way with this machine.

For those who are new to the 1000, enjoy it to the fullest, and know that if it werent for this forum, many of the things listed above would've never been a reality. The 1000 would've been discontinued almost as fast as a Roland product.

For those who helped pave the way for all the improvements (whether it be OS suggestions, OS development, computer software editors, hardware improvement suggestions, repair services, customizing & cosmetic work, JJ OS manuals, e-books, shared tips & tricks), you all know who you are (too many names to mention) and you all got my respect!

hear hear. i'm coming up on my 4th year day, too.

having the mpc has changed the way i do business in music, but even more so in life.

I remember buying my 1st ever piece of gear. It was the 1k. I got mine out of the very 1st batch to come to Canada. BRAND SPANKING NEW. It was surreal. No Joke. I've never even seen a piece of actual gear before that. After getting into the machine, and getting into so many roadblocks because it had so many bugs and was so limited at the time, I gave up.

I sold it, and bought a 4k, that I used pretty much as a standalone. After almost a year with the 4k, I realized I wasn't using much of the more advanced features anyways, and plus I was considering giving up on music altogether, so I sold it.

After a few months, I just couldn't take being MPC-less so I re-bought a used 1k. I think about a month later OS 2.0 was announced, the internal hard drive kit was announced. It was the best timing. The 1k FINALLY was just starting to become the MPC I always wanted.

As time went on, things just kept getting better and better. JJOS1 came out which blew me away. I couldn't believe that features and function wise, the 1k was close to being on par with the top of the line MPC's. In fact it even had features and abilities that the 4k, for example, didn't. It also had features that no MPC had since the Roger Linn days as well. It was really validating that I made the right decision to come back to the 1k.

Things turned ugly for the 1k with the whole pad issue though. That was/is a huge let down with this machine. But Nym, lit some fire under Akai's @$$ and finally we got an official pad fix, and new MPC owners have perfect pads now. The rest of us have to pay to get new pads, but at least we have the option to get new improved ones now.

Admittedly throughout the years I have had thoughts on giving up on the 1k, but this year...I said flowers it. I'm sticking with the 1k for good. If I gotta pay $200 to make sure my MPC lasts me at least another decade than so be it. It's better than paying 1 or 2 grand for another MPC, and have to bother putting the JJOS on that one too, or getting an MPC that I have to settle with just having an Akai os.

So even though there has been a lot of disappointments and struggles with this particular machine, I'm sticking with it, cause it's worth it. No other MPC has developed quite as much as this.

Well, when Lampdog was into his asr-10 14 years ago, I was sticking loops together in the magix hiphop musicmaker...

I was out for a while, decided to go the hardware route 18 months ago. Took a few months to do some research, and on a lovely morning in august 2007, I picked up a Mpc500. These things grow so fast...I can still remember playing with it at my desk, with nuthing more but my headphones and a turntable I bought for 10euros.
And now the 500 became twice as big. Real grown up. It changed to a 1000 overnight...
At first the 1000 was a bit shy. Was afraid for hookups and leaving the house y' know. I used to worry, but he turned out just fine. Now he's in the middle of his own network. All his outs plugged into a mixer, usb directly to my pc (he had the 'I need a pc now' fase), keyboard midi in conexion, midi out s900 conexion...Input via dj mixer from turntable.
Plus he goes out on regular basis. First I was affraid he might get hurt. Hanging around in studio with rappers and streetthugs. But he is doing great. I'm so proud of him. They're grown before u know it. (pinking away an emotianl tear right now)

i forgot to mention, i now have 2 mpc1000s.
my old one, and now ES-K's.
on this new one, i'll be taking it completely apart and "Expanding" it into my DAW. i'll put the screen on a flexible lamp head, replace the pads (internally) with the MPD16 sensors/pads, and increasing the size of the qlink sliders.
