MPC 2000 System disk

Hello everyone,

I just copped an mpc 2000 today for about $340 and i got it without the OS disk, I know i can get it from the akaipro website, but i wonder how i should 'use it'. what i mean, do i have to write the image to the floppy (rawrite, dd or else) or i should just copy the file to the floppy?

Thats my first question on this MPC2000/2000xl forum so I say hello.

What you will have to do is unzip the MPC2000 file which will give you an "MPC2000.sys" file.
Save that "MPC2000.sys" file to floppy disk to boot up the MPC with.

I didnt want to start a new thread so i will post here.
the MPC I got seems to have a broken floppy drive as when i copied the OS to the floppy disk it didnt start up as I expected it to
It gave me 3 messages on the screen ( as it lights up)
#1 MPC2000 Boot Rom v.1.00
#2 SCSI:7:
#3 Insert MPC2000 Disk!

I thought myself that it definitely is a broken floppy so i decided to dissasembly it and get it replaced with another floppy drive. assembled it back again and tha same thing happened.
I know that the floppy that I put to the MPC works fine as I used it like 2 weeks ago in the EMU ESI-32 sampler. The LED on the drive doesnt even light up so i suspect that the power supply cable might be dead/broken or.... (any suggestions?)

EDIT: I forgot to mention, all the LEDs light up and stay lit all the time, might be important so I added

I guess the problem is the disk, not the drive. You need to format the floppy disk in a format that the MPC can read.

Format your floppy disk in the diskdrive of your PC. Format it NOT in "quick fomat mode" and choose FAT. Dont worry, it take some time. You can drink some coffee in the meanwhile
After formatting copy both files (MPC2000.EXE and MPC2000.SYS) to the floppy disk.

Your boot disk should work now.

The disk is formatted with FAT system, that is clear, both of these files are copied to the root folder on the disk.

Another question - does your floppy drive LED lights up on power up? could you answer?

Yes the LED lights up.
without disk : 1x long 2x short
with disk (not the system disk) :1x long, 2x short, 1x long then there is the message (No system file !!)


I guess you are right with the power supply. Did you get the MPC from ebay?

Ok, so I fixed it,
I dissasebled the MPC once again, and connected the floppy drive to the external power supply and bam, it works
so Im fine now

I chose the AT PC power supply(the one with on/off switch) and it loaded the OS with no problems at all,
It works for now, but I will have to check the cable from the mainboard to the floppy drive(power supply cable) but at this moment i don`t have a voltmeter to do this.

By the way, if any MPC users from Poland, dou you know where (and if) I could get the F1-F6 buttons, not the one on the mainboard, but the plastic little ones

I wanted to thank all of you for help and I can also promise that this is not the last post in this forum as I am new to the MPC world.


EDIT: I Got the MPC off ALLEGRO.PL, its quite similar to ebay but it is polish

The only adress that I know is not in poland. Its mpcstuff.com and they are expensive. I guess its difficult to find something else cause I think these buttons are special Akai ones. If its not so...that would be great. I just thought about these buttons in transparent (clear) and these stuff underneath

I found some clear button ( the one of the MPC2500 and the MPC1000) at ebay canada but the seller said that they doesnt fit in the MPC2000
They also sell the grey buttons for the MPC2000 but the price is the same as the mpcstuff.com price.

just copped one too same problem why they charging so much to repair are they hard to find and replace?

Having the same issue my mpc 2000 classic will not boot with the boot disk i formatted with the files mpc 1.72 .exe and .sys, i know it is not an issue with the disk drive, is there a special way to format it for mpc other than just FAT?

FAT is the only file system that will work. Maybe you have a bad disk. Try another one and keep them away from magnetic fields and heat sources.
