"Directory Error!" Please help

Hi people, I've been making music for 5/6 years now but am new to the mpc500 - have only had it about 3 weeks but really enjoying it and think it will come to be an extremely useful piece of equipment. However, recently I've been having some issues with saving my beats. I understand the concept of saving programs (i think, it's quite confusing) but I've been starting to receive "Directory Error!" whenever i try to save my projects or even when i just try to 'save entire memory'. This is becoming quite an issue as there's no point in me working on beats if there's no way of saving them! I'd greatly appreciate if anyone could give me some info on this, especially if you have had the same problem so you can hopefully offer me some solutions...

i've never seen that one (luckily) first, is your Cf card full up? and also are you using the latest os?

This can be caused by different things. Maybe there's a corrupted file on your CF. Hook it up the pc by usb, and check the card (it will pop up on your pc monitor as an external device). Make a back up, format the card and try again my friend. Plus get the o.s. update like phono said. This will help preventing the cf card go all bad again.

Firstly, I do have the latest OS installed and, probably just by coincidence, it is since then that these problems have been happenning!

Phono - My CF card is definitely not enitirely full - only around 100mb of samples on a 2 gig card at the moment so I'm pretty sure that isn't the problem.

Menco - I'll give the formatting a try and see if it works. If not I'll have to come back here with more cries for help!

Ok I tried the formatting idea and it seems to be working ok now so thanks for the help.

Another piece of advice: don't press any buttons when the mpc is saving/ loading. This will make the file u are saving/ loading go corrupt.

as i read this, i see i had the same problem. with mine, the problem was that the mpc's software or something like that didnt work that good. i went back to the store and got a new one, if you dont get a new one atya store, contact akaipro.com they will help you out!

if saving is the problem, then i know your pain. You work hard to make a decent sounding beat and when you think you save it; it's not there. well try and save it like this; it's how i do it.
saving program and sample-
1. program your pads with a few drums and samples
2. make a quick 2 bar beat on seq 1.
3. mode + save- go to sav all prgm and smpl
4. press 'do it'
5. make new folder- call it test (or something like that)
6. next PRESS left to go back to last folder.
7. scroll until you find test folder and press right until you opened it
8. now press do it again and save with samples
for saving seg/songs do the same except save all seg/song in the same folder

if that's the problem that should help with the saving. if you need a video i'll gladly make one.

I've been using mpc500 for a week now and I had the same problem. I found out that it can be very picky about the audio filenames. First of all I had to rename hundreds of samples, because they just didn't show up in the machine, if they had long names like House Ride Symbal - 12.wav. I used Apple's Automator to rename bunch of samples and I screwed with some of them, so that they had space in the beginning of the filename. I was saving a program that consisted one of those srewed up samples and it gave me Directory Error. I figured out, that the reason might be that one sample, because I just had four samples loaded. I went back to Mac, removed the space from that filename, and loaded it again to a pad. Directory error was gone and it let me save everything.
