Quick question: the slider function seems severely limited in JJ os 2, 1.21, unless I'm totally missing something.

First, you can't run both sliders simultaneously? Is this true?

Second, it seems only the "tune" function works on either of my sliders. Cutoff and resonance aren't responding at all, under the "realtime" change selector.

I have read the manual and this doesn't seem to be addressed--don't mean to get on anyone's nerves if this is a common question. Any help is appreciated.

Under "note on," the options all seem to work as intended.

I'd hate to go back to the Akai OS just to use the slider and all its options....

weird, cutoff and resonance work as usual for me
and i use 2 sliders on TRACK REALTIME TUNE all the time, one w/ a range of 0-70 and another with a range of 0-50

i mean, you do have to set a filter on in GPE before the filter/res slider assignment will do anything.

yep, that might be my problem! Will investigate GPE later, got band practice now.....goddam band is gettin in the way of my learning the MPC! :):)

Nym,

What do I have to set in GPE that would affect the CUTOFF feature? I have a pad set PLAY MODE = NOTE ON, VOICE = POLY. The global play mode is POLY as well. I see in GPE where you can set ASDR but why would that matter for the CUTOFF on the slider? If set to +/- 50, CUTOFF should just attenuate/amplify to those settings regardless, right?

Maybe it's os2? I mean, I have been shuffling between operating systems and remember using this feature before, so I know it works on _some_ system....seems odd that this feature wouldn't work on os2 but would on an earlier edition or on Akai's. Am I missing something obvious?

well this may be something you already know (i feel like i'm missing something/we're missing an important sentence in our communication over the problem) but you have to have a filter APPLIED before it can be altered via qlink. ie, it has to be "turned on." by default the filter is off. just go to GPE and hit WHOLE and slap the low pass ON for the entire program - then the qlink slider should start doing something when you move it in realtime.

again, i feel like this is something you already know though, perhaps you could give me a step by step of what you're doing AS WELL as a consolidated expression of what you're trying to do.

like i say, this is something i do all the time (what i think you're describing). qlinks are vital to what i do.

I am starting to understand how this works through your directions. My misunderstanding was that I thought "cutoff" meant something like velocity, so there was a real time way to control velocity. Is there? I don't really want to control LPF/HPF/BPF, just to be able to fade up/out a pad at will.

I remember doing this just a week ago, before I sent my MPC off for repair. That was probably when I had the Akai OS on there, which is adding to my confusion.

What's the easiest way to set the q-link slider to control velocity? Mine doesn't seem to have that option. I will mess with the "note on" parameter to see if this works.

Thanks,

Don't ask me, the s**t seems to work now just fine (?). Sorry for the bandwidth...

WOW. Still not sure about the Qlink. For god's sake...

Loaded up the program today, I had recorded a drum loop at -120, Qlink slider set to TUNE, NOTE ON, with the after button pushed. This played the recorded sample back minus an octave, great. Now I can't seem to keep it there! Going between the track mute/main window seems to reset the Qlink and the sample is playing back at normal tune. But I can't seem to get the hang of how to keep it at -120 at all times. Muting and unmuting seems to throw it back (?). Does anyone know what I'm talking about??

I'm halfway thinking my Qlink is messed, but also just think I'm missing some huge piece of the puzzle as to how they function/don't function. Why would the Qlink not stay consistently in effect if just muting/unmuting???

Also, will changing between sequences (in the same program) affect Qlink settings???

EDIT: Something more concrete: when I'm on track 18, which is the drum loop set to -120 on Qlink as described above, then I hit F4 to go to track 19, the drum loop instantly goes back to normal tune. I just want to monitor the drum track while throwing down some bass notes on track 19. Why is this an issue???

Good god.

Sorry for the frustration.

sorry, but you're going to have to read the manual - both the AKAI manual & the Stan Steez manual for JJ OS - all of these questions are already answered there.

spending the time reading the manuals from the get go will save you more time down the road being frustrated & confused trying to figure this stuff out.

q-links are for real-time tweaking and recording filter sweeps & parameters that change over time. if you just want to drop a samples pitch and keep it there then you should change the samples TUNE in the PROGRAM screen.

OK Sooty, you are right, I'm at that point where I'm referencing the manuals a lot--trust me, I'm not a lazy a$$ who wants his knowledge handed to him by the forum. Sometimes I need to take a deep breath, take a step back, and try to find an answer in the manuals. This is my first time using Q-link sliders as mine was busted the entire time I owned a 2000xl.

When you are frustrated there are many things you should not do: get "honest" with your significant other, drive an automobile, keep going with whatever you are doing....add to that list: post your query to the MPC forum! Lesson learned.

ps--I think I found my answer by watching one of NYM's tutorials on Youtube. Not that it addressed such a basic issue, but when he was on the SLIDER screen I noticed the "track" setting and everything fell in to place....--Great tutorials, btw, NYM. You are like a geeked out version of my already geeked out cousin :)

hahahah you should see me in action.

yeah as sooty said, if you're triyng to make permanent changes to your program, you should go to PGM level editors (gpe, program mode, etc) to make the changes in the pad parameter screens. QLINKS are solely for live tweaking/recorded control modulation.

don't worry though i made the same mistake back in 04 when i first got my mpc - i was trying to tune my bass to the sample, and i used the qlink to get it to the perfect place and when i returned to the program, it reverted back..i was like wtf...but quickly realized what qlinks are actually for.

don't sweat it, you'll get it.
