Ok nothing more to add

YOu bought the 4000 cause it fits YOUR particular needs

I bought the 5000 cause it fits MY personnal needs ( i really don t need keygroups, already have a keygroup sampler ....though i need some stuff not present on the 4000...)

We are both happy with our machine

That the important point !

Both are great imo !

(that you can dl for free allover the net)

???

Real talk. Has Akai released any OS updates for the MPC 5000?

Yes already one

Still some bugs but not really a big deal for me...

While Dave Smith can take credit for MIDI and Roger Linn for taking the lead for the MPC line...this was still long ago. Neither of them have tackled a project like the one they are currently working on. While I am skeptical....I wish them success in pulling it off. They can have my $3000. But their product is very much vapor-ware as it stands today.

Not agree with you on that point askia ..

Dave smith released many great synths alone such as evolver & prophet & i m sure this machine will be a real beast !

Though my guess is it will take a long long time before we ll be able to play with it ....

I m on the pre order list for the linndrum2 but i recently receive a mail from roger indicating me it won t be released before middle 2009.

These are midi production centers used to make music. You all keep talking about which unit fits your particular needs, sounds like BULL SH*T to me. Sounds like another excuse to post a lot of garbage.

I cosign so with that note why not go back to making music and tweaking knobs on the your respective units.

There is nothing wrong with disagreements, however.....

You are still talking about two men....one that makes synths such as the evolver and prohphet which are not sampling workstations. The other helped design a sampling drum machine in 1994 (that is primitive by todays standards). Now these two imply that they will make a pad-type workstation that is better than anything on the market? You really believe that? Akai has put in a decade of work in the MPC line after they parted ways with Linn. Roland has been developing the technology behind the MV series for almost as long. So I have serious doubts that Smith/Linn can create a product in 2 years that can best Akai and Roland products that have been developed for a decade. As I said before, I will believe it when I see it.

When did they say, claim or "imply" that? Maybe some people on this forum are implying such things but never once have I seen or heard of Dave & Roger comparing they're new project to anything. As a matter of fact at one time on Linn's website he went out of his way to say that the machine they were creating was a drum machine and not an MPC, (Midi Production Center).

Where you gettin yo info from?

LinnDrum II
September 20, 2008:

I'm sorry to report that we won't be shipping in 2008 and I can't yet offer a new estimated ship date. The good news is that it's turned into a significantly more powerful and creative product. The bad news is that we'd prefer not to release details of the new design because it's so cool that I don't want to show our cards to the competition. However, I do want to thank all those who wrote in with suggestions because this interactive design process has very much helped to change what we thought the product originally should be into what we now know you really want. So please hold your questions while we're hard at work on it, and I'll be periodically updating this page as we release new information. If you'd like to be notified when we update this page with something significant, please click here to join our LinnDrum II email list.

For those of you who are new to LinnDrum II, its new subtitle is "Beat-Centric Digital Audio Workstation with Integrated Analog Synthesis". Inspired by how the MPC product line that I (Roger) originally created for Akai has evolved a new genre of musical instrument, LinnDrum II aspires to raise the bar beyond the current crop of high-end pad-oriented music production station products in order to enable musicians around the world to better realize the next wave of beat-oriented music.

- Roger and Dave

My mistake. They didn't imply...they said they will raise the bar beyond the current crop of high-emd pad-oriented music production station products......in simple to understand english....than means the MPC 4000, 5000 and MV-8800 which are the only products like that on the market today.

"LinnDrum II aspires to raise the bar beyond the current crop of high-end pad-oriented music production station products"

Oh ok, well I guess they should aspires to lower the bar and put out a run of the mill, mediocre crop of low-end mid-grade gurp-oriented doll houses.

I still don't see how "these two are implying that they will make a pad-type workstation that is better than anything on the market?" But if they are, GOOD! I think aiming to change the game is a hallmark of excellence. And they've done it before, why doubt they could do it again?

I can't wait to see it released. I'm saving my money. I hope it better than the MPC 3500, (I mean 5000.)

Realest **** ive ever heard u say

I bet it won't be a step backwards like what Akai is doing with the 5000.

I'm pretty confident that they will make this a step up from the first Linn Drum II

Their claim that they will raise the bar is a direct statement that they will produce a product that is better than what Akai and Roland has to offer. I am sorry if that is not obvious to you.

But the fact remains....I didn't imply that they should put out a piece of crap. I simply made an observation that that neither of them have accomplished anything close to what they are setting out to do. If I am incorrect, please point me to a specific product.

Anyway...we will have to wait and see. I hope they significantly changed that ugly MPC 60 II type of design. An adjustable, large LCD is a must. Also...I hope they get away from pads/buttons that light up. And I hope they don't intend to put the data wheel in the awkward position.....

For the record, I hope it is better than the MPC 5000 too. I hope it is better than the MV8800 or anything Roland has planned. This will be a good thing for us consumers. But until their "dream" becomes a reality, I have everything I need in the 5K which offers numerous features seen in an MPC for the first time. If that is a step backwards...then so be it.

I completely agree that it would be great for us consumers. Both Akai and Roland have been lying down, and need to step up and
stop making mediocre machines that only do 1/2 the job that they should be doing, because neither company is willing to push the
envelope.

I would call putting a Mediocre synth on an MPC a step backwards. If they wanted to put something of the Evolver's level on it,
then yes, that would be a step' forward. Where's the Modulation Matrix. Where's the Sysex Dumps...

You could also indicate that the 5000 offerred many things that were never seen in an MPC before. I would say they eliminated
as much as they added on . Again Where's the Modulation Matrix. Where's the Sysex code for remote controlling? Where can I plug
in my 128 external hard drives and 2 Internal Harddrives? Where's my Ak.Sys. Where's the Q-Link sequencer? Where's 512M?
Where's unlimitted Programs (why only 128.. why limit your users)? Where's 300,000 note capacity (and yes I HAVE hit the limit).
Where's 128 Tracks per sequence? Where's 128 Sequences in memory? Where's 6 pad banks?
For every 1 thing they added with the 5000, there's probably 2 things that they removed. You can call that a step forward if you want.
I call it a step back. Or at the very least a step to the side.

Also, I wouldn't say that neither of them has accomplished what they are setting out to do. One of the things that they are set out to do, with the LInn Drum is to put an Analog Synthesizer into it. Well, I would say that Dave Smith has that down pat pretty well.

Vapourware??? Bullsh*t!

These guys have an incredible pedigree of designing groundbreaking things and bringing them to market to sell by the bucketload (Prophet 5, anyone?? Linn Drum??)

In the last 5 years, Linn and Smith have brought have a dozen products to market (Adrenalinn, Evolver, Prophet 8, etc etc) all of which have been extremely well received and sold faster than they can ship 'em!

Why on earth do you thing they won't be able to deliver a new successor to the MPC? There's every precedent to show they will!

You're an ignoramous.

The pedigree of these guys is well deserving of respect -
Dave Smith invented MIDI.
He developed the first practical polysynth (using a design of digitally scanned keyboard with microprocessor control - the Prophet 5)
He invented 'vector-synthesis'
His 'Studio 440' was a pad-based sampling/MIDI workstation that was the forerunner of the MPC series.

Roger Linn revolutionized drum-machines with his digital-samples-stored-on-EEPROM design for the Linn Drum.

One of the key aspects of their work is how they've always designed stuff that is extremely practical and musically useful and easy to use - that's why their products became best-sellers and "must-have" instruments for every pro in the business.
That's why you can buy music albums from the year after one of their famous products was released, and 9 outta 10 of those records will all be using machines from Roger Linn & Dave Smith!

Regardless..they have never produced anything on the level of the latest MPCs or MV. The MPC 1000s operating system is more advanced than the MPC 3000 or any drum machine Linn or Roger created. Now they are going to attempt to surpass the highend MPCs and MVs? I don't believe they have the resources to do it. And if I remember correctly, they put out a call for other programmers to help because they really are going to need it. I just don't believe you can work on a project for 1 or 2 years and expect it to be better than the current MPCs or MVs. Yes, I can easily imagine them doing a little drum machine/sequencer like they originally planned...but not what they claim they are going to do now.

Relax...do you have stock options with Linn and Smith? You sound as bad as me with MPCs

It's fairly easy to find qualified dsp programmers in Silicon Valley, where they are located. Luckily for them, there are lot
of out of work people in the Valley, many talented as well. And both Dave Smith and Roger Linn have had very successful
product lines lately (the MoPHo having trouble staying in stock), so I'm glad that they will be able to hire some talented
Silicon Valley folk to their company. We (us musicians) should see benefit from this, beyond even the Linn Drum.

Time will tell, but what Akai has done with MPC line and what Roland has done with the MV line is not rocket science ...

should be interesting what they bring into the forey. I say, let's have even more alternatives.
