Let me add another sampler in the equation....The Sequential Circuits Prophet 2000/2002, once said at the time better sounding than the S-900.
It's a really warm sounding sampler/synth with a wicked self-oscillating analogue filter, unfortunately my one is now broken but when it worked I can honestly say what ever you stuck in it sounded nice, if you see one dirt cheap try it!
As to the SP Vs MPC I don't know, I think both are nice machines with their own flavour; use what you like I guess.
One thing I do know and will add is that the MPC-3000 totally pisses on my MPC-2000XL sound wise I think, the only way I would describe the 2KXL is thin, light and weedy sounding even though it is my main work unit as I don't have mpc3000 money lol I just so happened to of played one next to my XL
