"Sound" of the 60.

Let me add another sampler in the equation....The Sequential Circuits Prophet 2000/2002, once said at the time better sounding than the S-900.
It's a really warm sounding sampler/synth with a wicked self-oscillating analogue filter, unfortunately my one is now broken but when it worked I can honestly say what ever you stuck in it sounded nice, if you see one dirt cheap try it!
As to the SP Vs MPC I don't know, I think both are nice machines with their own flavour; use what you like I guess.
One thing I do know and will add is that the MPC-3000 totally pisses on my MPC-2000XL sound wise I think, the only way I would describe the 2KXL is thin, light and weedy sounding even though it is my main work unit as I don't have mpc3000 money lol I just so happened to of played one next to my XL

I don't think the 60 sounds that great as a sampler. I prefer the lower sample rates available on the 950, E-Mu SP12(00), and Emax. In comparison, I feel like the 60 sounds thin and gives tracks a slightly generic sound when used exclusively. Not in comparison to a 2000, for example, but when compared to the other units I mentioned. Even "Endtroducing...", which I think most people would agree is probably the most masterful example of MPC60 use ever, sounds kind of same-y to me (although of course the music is unbelievable). To be fair, I'm sure the fact that it was recorded onto ADATs didn't help.
Having the option of a filter and variable sample rate on a 12-bit sampler allows for way more sonic variation. Low-pass is especially usefull for making tracks sound thicker.
Not that you can't make great music on a 60 (case in point, "Endtroducing..."), but I feel like the 60's greatest strength is the killer sequencer. I can't imagine a sequencer being much better than the 60's. The timing is super solid, the swing is unbelievable, it's easy to edit your patterns, etc., etc. I love the MPC 60 as a sequencer.

Should be mentioned that chopping on the Emax or 950 is a little harder than on the 60 w/ 3.10 IMO, and hearing somebody mention the Mirage is enough to make me want to run from the room screaming

In the last few months I really got used to using the 1000 with jjOS2. I know it's 'not the real thing' but what it gives you in ways of sound shaping, using filters and LFO's and re-sampling is pretty amazing. I then lay off some beats onto the emax and resample into the 1000 and use the phrase system which works a little like acid but messes with the sound more by way of wobble, which is great for guitars, I find.

I still love the 60 and will use it soon again.

IMO, the Emax is a super-underrated sampler. I like it better than the 900/950 in terms of grittyness, and the filter kicks @ss. I think it's a little easier to edit sounds too. Lacks the sampling time and time stretch of the 950, but that's not really why people use these boxes anyway, right? Anyone who likes the 12-bit sound should pick one up while they're still pretty cheap. You can use it as a signal processor if nothing else.

Comments like this will make the price go up... and I haven't acquired a third one yet. Prices are already getting to be pretty insaine on these boxes though.

Hahaha... "3rd one" I guess I haven't checked prices for awhile. Looks like they've gone up a little. I got mine w/ (suprise) factory SCSI (supposedly only 1000 of these made) for about $125 2 yrs ago. Same unit sold for $450 on ebay recently, but the prices for non-SCSI Emaxes still seem pretty reasonable. I was just sharing my personal opinion, but PM me if you're seriously bummed and want me to delete the comment. I'll happily do it but I'm sure you realize that quality vintage gear usually goes up in price regardless of endorsements from unknown basment hacks like me .

Nah dont delete... No censor here. Im just messing with ya. You arent the only one who sings the emax's praises round here, and I cant silence all of you. LOL (Watch out for my traveling sniper team tho') I got 2 SE HD's w/SCSI $150 and $225. Now them jerrrnts are like you said $450. A good thing? Not to me...cuz I dont plan on selling mine... only acquiring more... (I wonder how many Emax's would it take for me to become an Evil EMU supervillian!)

I put quite a bit of time in research into deciding which 12bit sampler I wanted to rock with. I found this article online called Grit Wars that has some sound examples of the 2kxl (in 12bit conversion.) vs. SP-1200 vs. S-950. I took a listen and liked the SP-1200 best. Since allot of the online articles prefer the Emax when comparing it to it's cousin the SP-1200, I was convinced. Then add the fact that the sampling rates are variable and that it has a real analog filters! This machine is truly a beast. It make the other 12bit samplers sound mild by comparison IMO. As I heard some one say before "the Emax seems to take a sample and sprinkle it with stardust." Damn, I'm makin me want to add another one...
