I don't know if I'd necessarilly agree with knocking out the Pro Tools step.
I, personally, like to mangle the sample up in Pro Tools before I dump it into the MPC. This way you can take care of high passing, EQ, compression, pitch shift, chorus flange whatever the hell you want, with high quality plugs AND edit in a non destructive manner. I'll use the MPC for the chopping up and creating the foundation of the beat.
That's just me though! Do whatever works for you- just throwing in my pennies.
