I'm a new to this forum and I apoligize already if I posted this in the section.
I bought an mpc2500 that was already used for two years and it came with a 40G hard drive and 128mb installed inside. The machine itself works fine and the problem that I'm dealing with is about the hard drive.
Earlier I talked with the guy who sold me the machine over the phone and he sayed that he had started to format the drive but 'cause there wasn't enough time he had to kill the process in the middle of formating. So we both agreed that I'd have to format the drive when package arrieves through the mail. And this was also nessecary 'cause he is using Vista workstation and I, on the other hand, XP.
At this point gotta mentions too that I fully trust his word that the drive is working properly. Of course I can be wrong, but some how I just can't fit that in to my head after talking to him several times and viewing other peoples feedback about selling / buying stuff from him over the internet.
As I first time plugged the machine in to the computer through the usb I noticed that by right clicking the icon of the mpc hard drive in MyComputer it only allowed to format the drive as NTFS. This was weird considering the fact that I was looking for the FAT32 option. So anyways I formated the drive with the only option (NTFS) and after that copyed some drumsamples to the drive. Now, as started looking for them in my mpc (pressing mode+pad2 to access "load") it showed blank in the hard drive section and the samples were not anywere to be found. So I plugged the usb back in and as I viewed the drive through MyComputer it showed that the samples were there (on the drive).
At this point I came to the conclution that the reason must be because it's still NTFS, NOT FAT. Now at this point I removed the partiotion from the drive through the device manager and was a little bit back-against the wall. This was because I was planing to create the partition again and then trying to format it to FAT. I got a little bit scared at first 'cause I didn't find the way to create the new partition. Of course at this point 'cause there is no partition you can't see the drive in MyComputer. I uninstalled the drive from the computers components and as I plugged the usb again it automatically installed the hard drive (happens everytime you plug a new device through usb to your computer). I hoped that this would show the drive in MyComputer automatically but it didn't. Now I was worried 'cause I was afraid that I had messed something up really bad. Of course after a moment of view the solution was simple and I made the new partition through device manager. I for a moment I was relieved 'cause I got the computer working with mpc again and as I created the partition, the device manager wanted me to format the drive. STILL the only option was NTFS but I did it anyway to get the machine working with XP again.
After 5 long hours of waiting the format to complite itself there was a new problem (just my luck!). When the format counter hitted 100% an error pop-up jumped to the screen saying that there was a problem with formating and it couldn't complite the process. Now I COULD see the drive in MyComputer but I got no access to it because it only kept saying "you need to format the drive to make it work properly". After doing some research over the internet, I dowloaded a freeware called CompuApps Swissknife v3 'cause with THIS particular program I could actually format my hard drive to FAT32. Download, install and I was ready to go. I formated the drive into FAT32 and first MyComputer showed that the drive was still NTFS although Swissknife sayed it was FAT. Next I restarted both the computer and the mpc to make these functions working (U know when sometimes to make changes U have to boot the machine, right?).
When the computer was back on and I plugged the drive into it it finally showed FAT32, I was so relieved. So instantly I copyed again drumsamples to the drive and started looking for them through mpc. But what do know; STILL I don't them anywere. So I desided that I'd give it a one more change and formated the drive once again to FAT32.
NOW this is were it gets weird. After copying the drums again with still no results of finding them I desided to plug the drive into the computer (to check out are the samples on the drive through MyComputer). As I did turned usb function on from the mpc the hole computer froze. I mean that the mouse and the firefox window worked properly but I didn't see the devise on the MyComputer. After a short period of time (in here we are talking about a minute tops) nothing seemed to work. Every window that I had opened earlyer were stucked and f.ex. I could access my C: (the main harddrive of the computer) 'cause all I got was a blank window and "the program is not responding" error messages. I also couldn't remove the hard drive from the icon (the little usb icon that U see on the right side of the toolbar next to the clock when U plugg something in through f.ex. usb). After waiting for a while I decided to hit the "mount" (f6 on the mpc) to eject the the drive. Nothing happens. I do it again couple of times but nothing.
At this point I had already opened the Swissknife so that I could format it (AGAIN!!) and it was stuck too in the point were it starts to load up. All of a sudden Swissknife starts to work again and I see the mpc hard drive through it. I look into my MyComputer window (on the side) and it's back on again too, also showing the hard drive. Now I'm like what the f.... just happened. I formated to drive once more and at this point I decided to restart my computer once more to (U never know if that makes any difference, but many times it does). Note: I didn't unplug the usb-wire from the computer and the mpc is still on at this point. When the computer was restarting itself and showed the bluescreen (that sayes someting like loading the windows or something, U know what I'm saying) I got jammed again. This I think was the result of mpc plugged in and trying to connect to the computer (the mpc screen was showing the tittle "accesing..." like always when U plug it in). IF this wasn't the cause of the mpc something has seriously happen to my computer (hope not!!!!!). I started hitting "mount" and at first ti had no effect but after a short while it unplugged the mpc.
So this is were I am now.
If I connect the mpc to my pc, the system gets jammed. How can I fix this?? It's obvious that this is not supposed to happen (f.ex. when I plugges the usb in the FIRST time it showed the hard drive on MyComputer right away). Have I demolished the hard drive in someway or have I damaged someting else either on the hard drive or in the worst case on my xp/computer?
And of course the main problem, what am I doing wrong 'cause I can't find the samples (that I've copyed to the drive) anywere in the mpc menus. The format of the samples that I'm using is Wave (44khz 16bit). Oh yeah and the mpc has the JJ OS1 v.5.48 in it and I'm a first time mpc user.
I'd really hope that you guys could help me out 'cause at this point me myself or my friends (two ex-mpc users) are out of ideas.
