Ive got a question: How do you guys use them....Im thinking of getting an S950, How do you use them with your mpc? i mean, do you just control it via midi and handle all your sampling in them....or do you sample, then transfer the samples to the mpc? Do you have some samples in the mpc, and some in the sampler? I would think that the DACs on the s950 are what are good.Do you resample back and forth? Do you use them for the effects, looping, etc.

just wondering how youall utalize them. I wanted to try something out with a differant sound than im pushing now, so i can resample, and sample, filter, etc. getting diffearnt types of sounds. And getting types of characteristic to my sounds from several pieces-rather than just one.

i thought the asr, or s950 would be a good start, but im not sure....what about a s5000 series? or s6000?

thanks

i use it as another instrument, sequence with the mpc.

It depends on the sampler, and what it's best at. With an s5000 or something, it's not that bad to loop, and i would use it to load large multisampled instrument that won't fit in the mpc's memory.

The s950 only has limited memory, and is not that easy to loop on. no waveform display in those days. I use my 12-bit racksampler for all my kicks and snares because i like the way it sounds, and it has some decent filters. You can't use the layer function on the mpc to layer midinotes, so you'll have to figure out a way to do that on the racksampler.

What racksampler do you use ieism?

I have two Yamaha Tx16w samplers. One for the kicks and for the snares.
I love the way they sound, but i wish they had more memory. They have something like 18 different filter, but the emax filter still sounds better to me.
how much memory does that emax have, i'm thinking of buying one?

not sure, 18.8 seconds at 28k Hz.

Do you have the typhoon os for those samplers? It's free...

No doubt. Without typhoon, they're pretty much useless.

I'll try to find and emax, 18 seconds is enough for me.

@Cyrus: Sorry to steal your post like that. To get back at the question. in your situation, i would not get the s5000. They are still a bit expensive and won't sound that different then you mpc.
The s950 is a nice machine, but they're getting harder to find and are often overpriced.
For the price of one s950, i bought 2 tx16's. Both had memory ugrades (important, cause ram for these older samplers is VERY expensive) and one was new in the box with some spare parts included.
The Emax would be a great machine also. Emu samplers are known to sound warmer than Akai, and they're not that expensive either.

ieism, if you get an emax, get a HD SE one with the matching graphics, not the stickers. Those tend to have the scsi chips installed. You can add an external scsi connection with an internal to external scsi adaptor, a longer internal scsi cable with another connector, and the plus OS available online. You will need to drill the hole or get someone with a punch for the scsi connector (computer repair shops should have one) it is dumb easy. I have a zip drive, it formats quickly, holds 35 banks (20 Mb's is the emax's software limit) but makes life much easier and with less worries in these days of floppy drive faliure.

As far as the s5000/950, there was a time in April when many 5000's sold for $300 wth options installed! I missed it, but I got a 6000 for 600 with the fx board, 16 outs, usb card and max ram. I could sell the options and make back all the money. so if you keep an eye out for one with no reserve, you can get a real deal.

but it depends on what you want, if you want 12 bit crunch, go 950, if you want mad sample options, 5000.

thanks guys, thats exactly what i was looking for.

Ill have to say, the 950 sounds good cause i definately want something with its own characteristic-rather than just a repeat of what ive got (sound wise)

my friend has two older emu samplers, i forget wich ones, anyways i could hear the warmth you are talking about, for sure. I think i might wait for a good deal between the emu, or s950, and frequently check ebay for the two.

Its funny because lots of times ill be able to tell if someone used an mpc or not to make thier beats. I can tell because of the pad release, but also because there is a certain tingy harshness that sticks out to me, on the mpc2000xl; maybe im just crazy, but thats why i want to get another sampler, so i have a variety of sound characteristic to my beats. Ya know, like when you can tell everything came out of a triton, or if it was made solely using Floops.

if i got my drums comming out of one thing, sample on another, and bass on another, hopefully ill get a more "live vibe"-in the sense that everysound is an individual, rather than just a sample....sort of as if each sound was a differant person in a band with thier own flavor. the reason i like to sample. anyways i hope you feelin what im saying.

ieism: i definately didnt think you where stealin nothing, always glad to see some good info, offtopic or not. BTW. do you use those tx16 separately out of habit? or is there limited polophony?

Peace out

I got a tx16W... where did you get the typhoon OS from?

"s5000. They are still a bit expensive "

It's not that bad. I picked up an S5000 for $400. There are more features in the sampler than I know what to do with.

I use two because i like my kicks and snares separately. This way i can eq and compress them apart. I could assign them to different outputs on one sampler, but i'm too damn lazy.

i use my s950 mainly for basslines, the low pass filter on it is the shit. i sampled this piece of shit casio bass sound and it sounded **** huge and dirty on the s950, crazy, just an example.
