Hard drive question

Are the rest of you able to load large files (at least 1MB each) directly from your internal HD on the 1000? Because mine can't handle anything of any moderate size. It does fine with single-hit drum sounds, but once you get to about 100k or so, it gives "end of file!!" message when trying to load, or goes into compulsory repeated loops when you hit F5/play.

I searched "end of file!!" on here and most people's issues have been with the CF card--either needing a new one or reformatting. I wondered about reformatting the HD as I'm using a Mac Powerbook G4, but like I said, it plays short sounds fine. Perhaps I should reformat anyway. If so, should I reformat through the MPC itself or through the Powerbook? I remember this being a big issue on the 2000xl but can't remember which host (MPC or computer) to use to reformat!

Kind of sucks b/c it would be nice to actually USE the HD instead of worrying about whether I should bother putting anything on it at all. At this point the only reliable method of loading is the CF card, so I could just use that as a transporter, storing files on the MPC's HD, bouncing them to my laptop HD and then to the CF card. Just another workaround at this point but it's obviously a pain in the a$$.

whats your model for your hd? also do you have the extra ram? did you format your hd when you first installed it? what os are you using? i have loaded a sample at 63 MB. could be your hd drive. just spend 20 bucks and get a couple used ones.

The HD is a Toshiba that was specified on the Akai page. 75 gig. I do have the extra ram. Since I didn't install it, I don't know if it was formatted; when I got it from the seller (ebay purchase), I believe I formatted it thru my Powerbook. I'm using JJ OS 2 1.21. I wish I could load a 63 MB sample!!!! I mean, I can, but not through the HD....kind of a wasted feature unless you can save to/load from it.

Before buying a new drive, I should probably format it again--do you do this thru the MPC or thru your computer??

EDIT: Formatted, tried to load 1MB file, got error. Guess the drive is toast. Boy, this MPC is a GEM!! Looking forward to telling the last owner that yet another piece of this machine was delivered DOA. At least this time I can score a new drive for cheap(er) and install it myself. Maybe he'll even split it w/me again...

and yes your drive is probably bad. just hit ebay for a new drive. not used. but new. you can pick up a rather large one for around $50. no bigger than 120gb though

Yes, I was surprised by Rich/****'s comment as well! Then I thought about it for 2 seconds and am now wondering how one goes about getting a hard drive that hasn't gone through the mail. I mean, everything goes through postage, whether it's by truck, plane, freightliner, etc.. Or are you saying the USPS is especially bad with delivering drives w/o damage?

actually, a palette of hard drives wont be flung around nearly as much as a single drive or an mpc will be. come on, have some common sense yo yo yo.

that drive is a sata interface and wont work. it needs to be 2.5" eide. like this

and as much as i hate to say it. the biatch is right. paletized freight see's less impact in shipping than a single unit through the mail would. but unless your willing to dish out twice the cost. buy online
