bad Cti/Kudu Purchases

people often cite cti and its subsidiaries as a good place to start digging for jazz,
i thought id start this thread so that people can warn others/express disappointment in their least favorite releases.

i bought this for £4 and was dissapointed,



its kind of soft rockish in places - i should have been put off by the tracklisting (lucy in the sky with diamonds). Theres also vocals on various tracks.. which never helps when looking for loops.

BUT i still bought it ...... cos its Cti

It really all depends. People have weird tastes in music. I've seen several people quote George Benson's "White rabbit" as a good record and it's a turd to me as well as most of his records on CTI.
Grover Washington JR. has tons of heat but "Soul Box" is a piece o' sh*t to me.
So many I could go on for days...

i actually thought bensons work on white rabbit was pretty dope lol

ha! i know what you mean with benson, i always expect more from his albums in terms of sampling material.... but he almost always plays smooth jazz. some tracks seem promising though... but then he plays his guitar over them!

are you talking about soul box 1 or 2 btw?

alot of them records aint all that but u will always find some good shit to sample thats why id rather download but one that is worh having on records is the power of soul by idris mohammed.

yeah, i find the earlier kudu stuff to be more of a guarantee in terms of a funk/soul jazz tip.

I have the double LP version so it would be Soul box pt 1 & 2.

Yeah, in my personal opinion that record is a big let down if you compare it with anything he did after that. I can quote at least 4 good records he's made so I don't understand what happened there.

hmm.. maybe some are arranged by bob james and others by don sebesky? just at a guess though... id have to have a look at the liner notes

I'd not heard of paul desmond before, did a google and found that players on the album include; Bob James, Ron Carter, Ralph MacDonald. I would have bought it on the strength of that (and the cover!)

I saw that paul desmond was from the 1950's jazz era - does the album sound less 70's - in the same way that the A&M cti's do?

yeah, his old white dude sax will put you to sleep quick....

I actually like both 'White Rabbit' and 'Soul Box' (the 1+2 set like Zapp), to each his own I guess. The opening track on White Rabbit is awesome and better than the Jefferson version IMO, the album kind of falls off after that, but it's better than most records. I don't love either one of these, but they're both solid.

Some bad CTI records like can still be sampled.
