panned sample problem

My mpc500 arrived today and i've been messing about recording some samples from an ipod. I haven't had time to adjust a load of settings, but something odd keeps happening everytime i assign the sample to a pad.
The qwick playback of the recorded sample sounds completely fine, but everytime i assign it to a pad, it always plays back panned completely to one side.
As i say, it has just arrived today, so it may be a really rudimental issue, but i'd really apprechiate some thoughts.

each sample can be panned once its assigned to a pad, have a check in the manual on how, if that still doesnt work, id check the source file
