RE: multi

I have been a mpc 60 mpc 3000 & mpc 2000 user i am sorry if this sounds stipid but i was wondering if somone can tell me what multi means and what is the function of this, multi on all my other gaer means multi recording as in all tracks at once and in the manual it never says really what it is. thanx for any responses J.Z

Basicly, a multi takes care of a group of Program that you assign to it. thing that effect the the program but are not within the function of the progam it self like the routing in the FX buss ect.

A multi is a group of programs you can load together. (drum program, bass program, piano program, FX program, mixed program)

A program is a group of samples you can load together. (drum hits, multi-samples, one-shots, special FX, etc)

A sample is a snippet of recorded audio material imported or sampled directly into an MPC.

Peep the manual to discover what other data is saved with multis and programs.

The difference between the MPC60/MPC3000/MPC2000
and the MPC4000 in this area, is that the MPC4000 can play more than one Program at once
(and a Program can be just a set of drum sounds, or it can be a sampler program -
eg an organ, piano, strings ... anything really)

So, the Multi is what groups all your Programs together.
It also stores which FX you've put on them.
You can have 127 (!) programs per multi and 4 different FX.


How do you work out which program will sound when the sequences play?

Well, each Program sits in a "Part" in the Multi,
and each sequence can have multiple tracks, with each track triggering a different Part in the Multi.


So for instance, your Multi could have:

Part 1 = Rock drum kit program
Part 2 = electro drum kit program
Part 3 = strings
Part 4 = piano .....

Then in your sequences,
Track 1 sends notes to Multi Part 1
Track 2 sends notes to Multi Part 2
Track 3 sends notes to... well you could set to Part 4
Track 4 could send to Part 1 too
Track 5 could send to Part 4...
etc etc

I thought Multi on an MPC 2000XL means that it could record on Multiple tracks/Midi channels at the same time...or is that called something else?

Also, as a side bar...the MPC 2000XL can have up to 4 programs playing in each sequence.

who cares, this thread isn't about MPC2000XLs!

The basic point is that "Multis" are the way you configure the MPC4000 to play multiple sound-sets (programs) at once.
