Memory Hack Job

did you end up desoldering the entire hack or just the wires that connected the chips to the pins?
if you did desolder the whole thing how long did it take?

Desoldering only takes a few minutes.

Depending on how the hack was done, it could take awhile. The hack in my 60 had chip sockets soldered onto the old chips with the extra chips in the sockets. I couldn't get in there with the iron I had, but I was able to break the sockets off with a pocket knife. It was a pain in the ***. Regardless of how your hack is installed, though, you'll want to be very careful not to burn the board, and shouldn't mess with it at all unless you have previous soldering experience. Make sure you get all of the solder off of the pins on the white connector, as this is where the legit board plugs in. Installing the real board takes about 30 seconds and doesn't require soldering. I don't think you could fit it in without removing the old chips though.

Well if you have a soldering gun like you should there will be no problems. It should be really easy.

I was also unaware of my memory hack. Now i gotta fix it. $135 to forat and about 20minutes of desoldering later my mpc 60 should be ready for the SCSI card when i get my tax return!

so are all these problems with the hack because a lot of people did some butcher jobs on the soldering? it seems like if its done precise and correct there shouldnt be any reason for it not to work? i dont even know if i can find an old memory expansion anymore but its prob more expensive that it should be. still on the fence on this.

i think the hacks dope... but some service places wont service that schit with it installed i heard... but with the scarcity of real expansion boards now, i dont think you have the privelidge of choosing unless you can track down a memory expansion...

Not scarce at all AFAIK there are a few places that carry them. I do not know that there are thousands left in stock, but my boy got one a few weeks ago.

sorry - maybe i'm missing something. I'm looking to upgrade from 16 to 32 soon and I was just going to buy 16 megs of ram from mpcstuff.com (about $34). So do I need to install somekind of board first in order to upgrade it to 32??? Sorry if this has been discussed... didn't see it anywhere...
