MPC1000 as S5000 style Sampler?

Hello there!

I'm considering buying an MPC1000 to replace my AKAI S5000 and BOSS DR660.

What I need to know is this: will the MPC1000 be able to operate as a drum machine AND have the ability to act as a standard sampler, with 3 octaves of keyboard samples to be triggered by a MIDI controller?

On top of this, will I be able to choose to send SOME samples out of individual outputs AS WELL AS out of the stereo outs. I need to do this so that our drummer can choose which loops, percussive parts and melodies he listens to. We do this on the S5000 by creating duplicate programs, then taking out the sounds he doesn't want, adding a click track (which doesn't appear in the stereo out to front of house) and sending it out of individual outputs to his desk, where he mixes that with the signal from the DR660 drum machine, and away we go....

Anyone know if the MPC1000 can do this!?

If you get JJOS2, you will have the option to create INSTR programs (as opposed to only a drum program). This program will give you key group possibilities like a rack sampler. I am a die hard s950 user so I swear my keygroups.

Your routing can be done on the original OS by just assigning sounds to pairs and panning them left or right, similar to what you do on a an Ensoniq EPS/ASR with the output expander module.

The JJ OS gives you the option to simply select each output as an individual output without having to do any panning.

Yes you would have to do it in the same way, duplicate programs, to send the same sounds to multiple outputs. Not too hard to do though.

I own both S5000 and MPC1000.

You need to get the JJOS2 to do proper sampling and even then it is not as good as the S5000.

S5000 has 64 voice polyphony(expandable to 128), MPC only has 32
S5000 has 8 outputs (expandable to 16) MPC has 6
S5000 can take double the RAM of MPC (twice as many samples in memory)
S5000 will cope with 48kHz sampling rate, unlike MPC
S5000 can do virtual samples MPC can't
S5000 programs are significantly better than MPC and the S5000 filters blow the MPCs away!

Generally, I think the S5000 is a great sampler and the MPC is adequate. It's much easier to use S5000 than MPC due to better user interface. S5000 is more bomb proof in live environment and can be rack mounted.

Don't get me wrong, I love my MPC1k, but it pales compared to my S5000. They both have strengths and weaknesses. If you just want to fire off one shots or loops, get the MPC. If you use multis or delve into S5000 programs and use filters and keygroups and things, don't waste your time.

I use MPC to do midi sequencing and a few drums and S5000 for EVERYTHING else sample related. I tried JJOS2 and it simply is not as good! Also the akai/ JJOS1 program format is different to JJOS2 which is a big pain. I'm not aware of JJOS2 computer tools for making programs(although haven't really looked). MPC has nothing like the cut.rate.keymapper software, which is so fast at making S5000 programs, also MPC doesn't have ak.sys, it just appears like a mass storage device on USB and is USB1.1 i.e. slow.

I sample my monophonic synth into my S5000 so I can play the samples as chords I tried doing this on the JJOS2 and it was crapp in comparison because of the harder to use interface and the pathetic filters. If you intend to do this, don't bother.

This post may be overly negative about the MPC, but I would just like to stress that it is primarily a drum sampler, not "proper" sampler and as such some of the S5000 type usefulness will be absent.
