I have searched and found nothing, so from what i have heard the XL has a warmer sound and the 1K has a very digital "what you see is what you get" sound. Id love to hear other XL users opinions on this ?.

the purists will say yes.

i say by the time you put your sound through your mpc, mixer, pc, to mp3 or cd its probably not noticeable enough to matter.

the only difference to me is that the newer machines don't feel as well built quality wise.

there are many years between the release of the 2000/2000XL and the 1000. They really have different AD/DA convertors; so they sounds different (no matter if there is the same resolution of 16bit/44,1KHz).
I prefer the 2000XL Sound (got both machines)
But: the fx-section of the modern MPCs sounds quite better then the very old-style sounding FX-Board of the 2000XL.

And note: not only the pure signal prozessing is responsible for the "sound" of the MPCs!
The tight sequencer of the "old" ones 3000/2000/2000xl is unbeatable + legendary.

Well, I have just tested a 1K about 2 days ago and I can say one thing:

It definitely sounds different than the XL.

I cannot say that it sounds worse, as I have noticed that it gives back 100% of what you send in, i.e. no coloring. But I'm 100% positive that drums sound better on the XL. The 1k lacks some low end and reproduces the entire range of the hi's, which means that it actually sounds like a PC. But for synth sounds it is way much better than the XL.

However, the FX and Filter sections are disappointing. The low pass filter lacks as much depth as the XL compared with a 950. Also, the reverb is awful, it takes away almost the entire body from the sound. The band pass is hardly entry level and the hi-pass is actually making the sample sound even more digital than without it.

Overall (including built quality, pads, screen, options, bugs blah blah), I must agree that the 1k is Fisher Price level, i.e. just a piece of shit. I would never spend my cash on it. If I ever want a NUKAI one, I would go straight for the 2500.

had a 1000 user come by on tuesday with his mp, and we loaded up the same drums on both and the 1000 is way, well the 2000xl sounds muddy when it comes to drums. and low on the highs, but it's not a meaningful difference, as you do process the sound afterwards.

on a side note, i always heard about the pads on 1000 being small and that they don't have the mpc feel. discarded all those opinions as being pretty gay, since it makes beats anyway, but found out from first hand experience the pads on the 1000 are meant to be beat on, lil fame style, while i prefer to rub them on my 2kxl, being grown and sexy and whatnot so i had problems triggering with a 1000. just had to get that off my chest.

I know its not sound related, but I had both. I just returned my 1000 (JJOS1 4.9)because I wont be going portable as much anymore.
My biggest complaints on the 1000 in comparison to the xl:

Pads (1000:Too soft, small, wonky velocity sensitivity). I didnt have the bk-n model or upgraded pad sensors, but why should I have to wait for a hardware revision to buy one or spend an extra $200 to upgrade it. Nukai effed up hard on the pads. PERIOD.

Effects: I dont have the eb-16 on the xl so I have no effects there, but the filter section absolutely KILLS the 1000. I agree with Kebzer 100% in this aspect of the 1000. Even with the 4 different filters on the 1000, the 1 in the 2kxl destroys them all. I dont know about you, but Im not someone whos concerned with keeping it strictly "in the box", so I dont think Id use the eb 16 anyways. I see my MP strictly as it is:Sampler/Sequencer, so, I have an sp 303 for effects.

Chopping: Honestly Ive messed with the 60II, the 2k, the 2kxl and the 1000. By far the easiest MP to use when it comes to chopping has to be the xl. For example, I have a string sample I want to chop. I zone it into 16 pieces and chop it up. Im left with the 16 samples, with which Ive created a new program. I really like to accurately truncate my samples and then, once Im satisfied I may want to take the sample Ive laced onto pad 1 (sound 1) and have it play immediately after the sample I have on say, pad 12 (Sound 12) without having to bang on multiple pads. So in the xl, this is simple: Trim-->Edit-->Insert Sound-Section Start. A new sample is created. WHY THE HELL WOULD AKAI REMOVE THIS FEATURE?? You might be able to do this on a different OS or something, but as far as I know.........nada.

As far as sound goes, everyone will tell you something different, so its all about preference. If you are recoring into a DAW, through a mixer from your MP I wouldnt even consider the MP's sound (unless it was total ish). You can manipulate the audio in the software anyways, so I my main focus would be on build quality and features. Hands down the best bet in those categories is the 2kxl.

Side Note: The ONLY feature on the 1000 that I truly wish my 2kxl had was the ablility to play the sounds in the MPC while sampling, however, if you have even a basic Mixing Board, you should be able to work around this.

Thin? not warm?
Yeah, this new generation mpc's don't colour ur samples like the old samplers. You'll get what u sample. A kick drum in my 1k sounds just like the record. (flat, with no eq)
Same kick (also flat) in my s900 sounds nice, warm and booming.
If I use my eq properly and do some layering and tuning in my 1k, it sounds good too. It's just another way to treat ur samples before and after sampling.

My opinion on practicly the same subject we discussed a few weeks ago.

there is a sound diff

if the mpc1000 has the same converters as my Mpc 2500 then the sound is better alot warmer on the new mpcs1000 and 2500 . i had my 2000xl for years and it sounds good if u are getting weak drums in any mpc ur a idiot and if ur out buying mpcs for better sound ur a idiot too!!!and for once and for all The MPC2500 AND MPC 1000 DONT SOUND DIGITAL OR WEAK OR CLEAN OR THERE IS ANY PROBLEMS WITH DRUMS NOT SOUNDING PHATT

I OWNED THE MPC60 MPC2000XL MPC4000 MPC1000 AND NOW MPC2500
EVEN MV8000 AND TRUST ME THERES NO WEAK MP JUST USER EROR SORRY!!!if u have a mpc and feel ur drums are weak lmao ur the one whos WEAK!!
My point is the new akai os even jj os free on a mpc 2500 has the compresser and eq on master settings to some it might be useless but to cats like me i can tweak my 2500 to sound night and day to my liking and thats a huge plus for me..

there for i feel it sounds better plus i didnt have 8 outs or the fx board in my 2000xl so the fx on my 2500 is opening up doors and able to mic it outs helping me also

he said PHATT

at any rate, bitching about sound, like it is so hard to purchase a mixer, or a sound card.

buhu. the 1k and 2,5k have a lot more posibilities to alter the sound inside the box, while the 2kxl -not as much. but one thing some people seem to be not aware off is that both make beats. i thought i'll just put that out there
