AKAI s950 PROBLEM

Just picked up a s950 on ebay... Im having a couple of issues. Hopefully somebody can help.

1. No sound from right ouput. Could it be a some settings messing with me or is it broke? (I dont find any panning settings).

2. MIDI going IN straight from a midi-controller OUT. When I play more than 2 keys at the same time fast, some notes wont play. (when I plug into outputs 1-8 every other note gets panned etc. for example output 1 and 2: When I play one note every other note is panned L,R). Settings or broken??

3. Am I supposed to have a system disk to load everytime I turn it on?

4. If it turns out that the right outputs is broken, is there any way around that? Im probably just gonna use it to sample with and then trow it back into the MPC or Logic...

1. It's not broken. Try hooking up one of the jacks on the monitor out and one on the right output, i.e. both jacks to the far left.

2. It is a mono sampler, i.e. one note at a time plays from the stereo outs. If you want more, you have to use the dedicated outputs, one output for each one sound separately.

3. No, you don't need a disk. Wtf man, haven't you tried to power up your machine?! Didn't you see that everything loaded fine?

4. Use the dedicated outputs as mono outs.

You need to read the manual. It is not a true stereo sampler.

You need to assign samples to keygroups in edit program. Each keygroup has its own output page (pg. 17 under edit program). The s950 is NOT stereo sampler though it has L and R outs. Use the main mix out for basic monitoring, and simply give each sample/keygroup its own output assigned to 1-8. All is 00, left is 9, and right is 10.

Remember the s950 only has about 8 voices. When you're playing multiple keys thru the "All," "left," and "right" outs it is easy to get voice conflicts. Like I said, each sound gets its own output from 1 thru 8.


The s950 has no boot system disk and I know for a fact it is never mentioned in the manual.

As far as the midi. Im just playing the preset sine wave, and it cant play more than 2 notes fast?

Like I said, Im just gonna use it to add character to my samples/drums etc and then sample it back to the MPC.....

So, Should I:
1. spent the money to get it fixed?
2. try to return it?
3. since Im just going to use it as an "effect", is the right OUT defect going to affect me?

No it's NOT. It is a mono sampler! What comes out the Mix Out is also only one channel! You have to actively assign the sounds to the right channel.

CREATE KEYGROUPS!! I already said this above. If you gonna get gear at least be down to read the manual and figure it out.


Assign samples to keygroups.

Create a keygroup, go to edit program, put a sample in the keygroup on the soft sample page, scroll down to the output page, select outputs 1-8. Make sure you have the s950 single mix out plugged into a mono input on your mixer.

Straight up you need to read the manual , dont be scared you will learn alot!

How do I make the samples mute each other? I got the 8 outs hooked up, chops assigned to pads and I have it on one shot, but can i adjust the mutes?

I've been using the 950 for sampling to XL and for some drums also, but I really want to start doing everything in it.
I just got myself a WZ 16, so now I can actually hook everything up and use the 950 and the outputs properly.

I asked this a while ago and someone answered but I couldn't find it from all the s 950 threads, sorry about that if i repeat myself.

That's the funpart of a mono sampler. Assign the sounds u want in the same 'mutegroup' to the same output. Et voila, it's like u switched ur program settings from poly to mono in mpc terms
