I haven't got my 3000 in the mail yet but a friend of mine who has one and isn't forum savy asked me to ask this here (I tried to search already) .

He says the zip on his 3000 will be recognized on day and then it won't the next . And after he tries again for a couple days of it not working he leaves it off for a week or so and it works again . I saw a lot of stuff in my search about a fuse, is that what's wrong ?

Also he's using 3.11 and has 3.16 but is scared to switch over cause he thinks it'll fck his MP up . And if it doesn't but he wants to go back to 3.11 can he ?

OS 3.16 is on a floppy and has to be inserted right when you startup the MPC and if you make beats on the OS 3.16 you can't load those beats up in OS 3.11. So yes he can go back but those beats he made in OS 3.16 are not going to work with OS 3.11.

Basically your friends Zip is taking a shit it's just that it's beginning of the click of death that's why it's so fickle.

I would just see if anyone else has a Zip drive and try theirs and see if that works if not than it could be something else but sounds more like faulty Zip drive.

3.16 was available for a some time in ROM.
3.16 is still available as a floppy boot.
3.16 was discontinued as a ROM version when Vailixi 3.50 was released.

True for all floppy based boot operating systems.

This is bull shit, not true ... perpetuated myth.

3.16 makes NO changes to file types.

Disk save and load operations remain the same as always.

Files created with 3.16 will load fine on machines that are running 3.11 in ROM.

Indeed ... although the intermittent nature of his ZIP drive suggests a combination of problems:

1: failed termination fuse in the MPC3000.
2: failing active termination supply on the ZIP drive.

Simple fix in the short term, replace the ZIP drive.

Likely fix in the long term ... replace SCSI termination fuse in the MPC3000.

I could have sworn I read that OS 3.16 was not backwards compatible awhile back. Someone on here said they made a beat on OS 3.16 and when they went to load it on his friends MP with OS 3.11 it would not work. But I am wrong obviously.

I wouldn't go with "obviously".

Maybe "anecdotal" rather than "obvious".

There may have been a peculiarity about one particular file, the disk it was on, angle of the sun, value of a barrel of oil etc on one day that contributed to this apparent anomaly.

It's been a while since I looked at anything 3.16 related.

Topics like this are good to bring up again... for all the right reasons.

But for the record.

The file/disk/load/save routines in OS 3.16 are identical to those present within OS 3.11/3.12.

Cheers,

Rohan.
