I was actually wondering if the mpc would ALREADY respond to external sysex coming in. A lot of stuff does for debugging and shit but its not really publicized b/c they don't see it as being worthwhile for the end-user. Maybe this ought not to be in the JJ but general forum.

If JJ created a Program Modulation Matrix like the MPC 4000 has, you have the ability
to set what ever Midi CC to a list of various parameters. If he didn't want to hard code
anything, they could do something like that, that lets you set midi cc on various parameters.

MPC filters sysex messages.
I wanted to do this midi connection:

PC-->MPC-->Synth

That way I can use my synth patch editor on the PC, but guess what.... The MPC filters out the sysex so the synth doesn't receive any messages :(
If the MPC wants to ignore sysex, it could at least ignore it but pass on the message to downstream stuff.

Not true. You must have something hooked up wrong. I use a bcr2000 to send sysex into the mpc and out to my qsr all the time. This works with recording and track through.

THAT, friend, would be the most amazing CC related function ever.

Don't forget JJ understands the matrix since he worked on the 4k OS.
Most JJ users probably don't realize many of the tweaks that JJ has done have many similarities to the 4k basis.
It's actually impressive considering that he doing thigs from a software perspective with no abilituy to modify the hardware.

Only drawback to the whole JJ thing is that he's working inside a shoebox and can only move things around.
Screens get pretty clutter really easy.
I think he deserves credit just for his attempts at rearranging things to try keep the workflow functional.

i was born too late for the 4k, which i'm both bummed and glad for.

i will read the 4k manual. i've perused it before but that was way earlier, before i knew anything
does the 4k have GPE?

a few of us requested that exact feature a long time ago when OS 2 was first announced. ( some folks might also remember the 'midi cc learn' proposal ? )

there were many months of silence on the issue and then finally the announcement from JJ that to implement something like that would be extremely difficult, requiring a few years work and coding the entire OS from scratch from the ground up. he gave it his best shot but at least we got a couple midi cc in parameters (filter frequency and resonance on the active track).

i'd pay an extra 25 bucks for a matrix quicker than you can say "paypal"!

Actually, that's just one function of the modulation matrix. It actually opens everything up in regards to modulating
various parameters.

You can set it up so that let's say Midi CC 45 modulates the filter cutoff for a given program. But with the matrix,
you can take it one step further. You can set it so that LFO Changes the Filter Resonance Amount, while the same
LFO is changing the Sustain on the VCA.

You get a given amount of modulation sources (including midi cc) and a given amount of modulation destinations.

So for sources, we have these options:
MODWHEEL, BEND UP, BEND DOWN, AFT TOUCH, VELOCITY, OFF VELO,
KEYBORD, LFO1, LFO2, AMP ENV, FILT ENV, AUX ENV, CONTROLLER: (lets
you assign a control change), EXT 1-8 (used for Q-Link control)

and for Destinations we have:

AMPLITUDE, PAN, PITCH, LFO1 RATE, LFO2 RATE, LFO1 DEPTH, LFO2
DEPTH, LFO1 DELAY, LFO2 DELAY, CUTOFF, RESONANCE, TF CUTOFF 1, TF
RES 1, TF CUTOFF 2, TF RES 2, TF CUTOFF 3, TF RES 3, AMP ENV ATT, AMP
ENV DEC, AMP ENV REL, FILT ENV R1, FILT ENV R2, FILT ENV R4, AUX ENV
R1, AUX ENV R2, AUX ENV R4, ZONE SELECT, ZONE1 LEVEL, ZONE1 PAN,
ZONE1 PITCH, ZONE1 START, ZONE1 FILT (the corresponding destinations are also
available for zones 2–4).

So you can have Filt Env, not only controling the Filters Env, but also the Pan and LFO1 Depth

It just gives you more flexibility.

But if JJ wanted to make a Modulation Matrix that was just for Midi CC's, I wouldn't argue :)

I"m already VERY glad over the new Chord Feature. I asked for this to Akai for the MPC 4000 but it was never
implemented. This is pretty much makeing me go out and get a mpc 1000. It's a great feature for doing live Improv's
type performances. You can build up your beats, bass and now chords on the fly.... with a little prep work.

Now if he would only implement Track Mute Groups like the 5000, so that you can control multiple track mutes from a single
track mute press.

Cheers,
Dave
