When i record the main out the volume is really low when playing it back on my computer or iPod. I tried messing with the threshold setting a little but the volume was still low.

It is low, but I think its designed that way to improve the battery life.
You can also go into effects and use the master effects to increase the volume a bit by cranking up the EQ and turning on the compression .
Personally I boost all my wave forms; mp3's, cd rips, etc, with a wave form editor to clean them up and prep them, kind of like re-mastering, before adding them to a play list. The way I see it its better to initially record a little bit low to avoid any high end distortion, and then boost it digitally afterwards with an editor.

Wavepad is an editor, theres also goldwave, but I've never used that one. I use an old 1.6 version of rip, edit, burn. I like the old interface better than the new versions. Nero burning rom also has a good wave editor in the full boat versions.
