what does normalizing do... exactly? ive used it, and i only noticed an increase of volume of the sample

"NORMALIZE:
When you assign a sample recorded at low level, its playback level will also be low. You can set the levels of pads in the MIXER mode, but you have to set some pads to a lower level. With the normalize function; you can increase the sample level to the highest level possible without being distorted."

normalize takes the loudest point of the sample and boosts it to max volume (which you can usually determine, eg: -2 db would mean no sound in the sample got louder than -2db - on the MPC i think it just goes as close to 0 as possible) and then boosts the rest of the sample relatively (so if the loudest part of a sample is -8db, the whole sample will be increased by +8db) ... it's a quick way of making sure all your samples are of a similar volume
