Which Sampler would you choose ? ? ?

Here's the deal :

I'd like to buy a sampler, and i've seen 2 (second hand) which could be good. Help me to choose ! ! !

First is an akai s950
Second is an emu esi-32
Same price

i've got a mpc2000xl, an access virus a, and a computer (i'm into electro/breakbeat).

What would you do ? ?

i would get a 950, but i have no good reasons to back that up. i really like my mpc so id stay akai. people will talk of warmer filters or some ish, but i can do all that once i track into the computer anyways soooo id get the 950. im lookin to get one myself soon too.

why should he settle for a s950, when they are currently overpriced, super ancient in functionality and memory and offer a decent sound, when he could go out and get an overlooked s1100, which comes with a scsi out, beautiful filters, 18 megs of total memory and a beautiful sound which is the missing link between the sound of the chunky s950 and smooth punchiness of the 3000.

And what about the emu ? anyone has it in his studio ? I've heard that they sound really warm ?

a lot of people love the s950 for it's gritty sound.
I don't have a 950 myself, it's a nice sampler but i wouln't want to spend more than $200 for it. I suggest you have a look at the Yamaha tx16w as well. It's almost the same as a 950, but has lots more memory, and tends to be cheaper. Unfortunately Yamaha won't load wav. and snd. files, so if you plan to use your mpc's samples you'll have to convert them on a computer first (but i guess that goes for the Emu as well)

i don't really know that much about the Emu, a friend of mine has one and i've looked at it a couple of times but never really used it. from what i remember, it even had a zipdrive installed and it had some effects build in too. But that might be optional, so check first.

yes mpc is a sampler, but it does not multisample. in other words you can't load up 1 string note and have it automapped across a midi keyboard to play your own melodies with. sure mpc has 16 levels, but depending on the kind of music you make, lots of people like a real rack sampler for melodies.

also, the mpc sampler sounds very clean, you don't have that gritty, kinda noisy sound that you'll find on other samplers , such as the s950. I've tried and tried with soundforge or vst plugs in to get that warm and "unperfect" sound, but i think the best effects won't replace old school samplers

Take a beat, sample it into the mpc, resample it in 12 bits and maybe 22000 Hz (if you've got the patience !!!), you won't get the same sound as what goes out of a true 12 bits sampler...

i find windows sound recorder actually works best for me when i want to lo-fi something up. just downsample using that to like 12bit or 8 bit mono and back to 16 a few times and things can get pretty dirty. not the same as a 60 or 950 but better than most plugins i have tried.

actually i think it is do to the windows sound recorder code being at least 8 years old and it isnt like a plugin that is trying to process your sound in 32floating bit precision or something it just doing the simplest (and dirtiest) resample it can.
