Defragging the HD.

when connected to the pc, would you guys recommend defragging the HD of the MPC?

In my opinion...no as a precaution. Not unless you got the thumbs up from technical support or found documentation in the manual stating you can do this.

If your HD is almost full and you need to squeeze a bit more data on, then defragging at your own risk might save the day.

But with 300GB you got plenty of room there haven't you.

It's possible that if you use the HD recording function a lot you might get some benefit from defragging there to speed up access time.

Copy and paste your entire HD's contents to one of your PC drives before trying the degragmenter. Could take a while. Then just do the Analyze function to have a look and see just how fragmented the data is on your MPC drive. If there's a lot of red stuff, it may be worth doing.

Should be OK but I wouldn't recommend it yet unless there's a real need.

The main thing to avoid in my experience is using the Check Disk PC function, as it tends to rearrange things to optimize the disk for PC use which can upset data access (which may be non-PC standard) on your MPC.

It would be interesting to get feedback on whether any automatic (transparent) disk houskeeping functionality is built into the 5K's firmware to keep the Hard drive optimised without actual user intervention.

OK, here's the official answer to this question: -

The 5000 Hard Disk comes preformatted using fat32.

Also, when you format the drive within the 5000 it formats it using fat32.

In both cases you can defrag from your computer via USB. NEVER format from your computer as NTFS.

Yeah, I hadn't really thought about disk optimisation on the 5K till it was mentioned here.

Defragging your hard drive will not gain you any additional disk space. The only thing it *may* do is to improve sample loading times, but that's only if your disk is very fragmented. Honestly though, the disk usage for an MPC will likely not be improved by defragmenting the drive.

The high risks involved with defragging the drive through windows in my mind highly outway the small potential gain.

Correct and I'd say make sure, just like your PC or Mac drives, that you are backing up your work regularly.

It only becomes high risk if you stand to lose your hard earned work which isn't backed up.

At least if you've got a full backup, you could simply reformat the 5K drive and dump all your latest stuff back onto the drive again.

Some manufacturer's now state that you should not defragment your hard drive because your machine knows where to write the data for best performance (as long as there is plenty of space on the drive). Moral: get the biggest drive you can.

So if you don't need the space don't do it. Could actually make things worse

On the Akai MPC5000 it's ok to defrag from your computer via USB.
