It all depends on the midi note assignment. E.g. if A13 in the xl is note 40 E1, then in the 500 B1 will be 40 E1

The 12 to 16 is more of an issue if you have a full XL bank or if you have the D bank full.

sandstorms plus MPCs?

woooowwwww.... no good. I would just keep my MPC in a ziploc freezer bag, with the cables punched through and sealed with electrical tape... It would make it hard to use the scroll wheel though.
