disk read error with external hard drive

I have a 5.2 GB external scsi hard drive for my MPC. Always worked smoothly. Until this morning. I was loading up an .APS file, and it was loading up sound after sound, and then I heard a faint click in my hard drive, and the screen on the MPC said "disk read error". I turned both the MPC and the hard drive off, and gave it about 10-15 minutes, and tried it again, but the same result. It seems to be recognizing all the files, but when i attempt to load them up, i hear the dreaded click sound and get the disk read error. is the problem here with the drive, the MPC, the cable? This is agonizing, because i have nearly filled up the hard drive with amazing music. I can always remake what was on there, but that would be a gigantic pain in the ass. What should I do? Is there anything i CAN do? Please help. I am lost on what to do. Thanks

Depending on how much you value your data you could contact a data recovery service who might be able to retrieve the data from the disk.

weird thing, i just tried it again, and now it is working....however, i do value the data greatly, and am now a little scared that this might happen again, permanently this time. do you know of any good data recovery services for external hard drives?

If your disk works then I would advice you to backup all the stuff on that disk asap, if it messed up once then chances are not unlikely that it will go tits up sooner or later.

i i want to do that, but im not sure what the easiest way is not back up all the files. should i get a new hard drive? how would i transfer from hard drive to hard drive? im not sure how i should go about doing this

cant help you with backing up what you have already, but if i was you i would stop using a scsi external drive altogether and get a card reader.

same thing happened to me with my zip drive but i never got it to work, so your lucky.

i'll never use a external scsi again.

a card reader is more reliable and easier to back up onto your pc.

how do the card readers hook up to the mpc? i will definitely look into one of those.

you can get an internal one or an external scsi.

i would recommend the internal one though.

they're a bit pricey if you get one that is more "official" looking from the mpc dealer sites but there is a cheaper alternative for like 30 bucks.

if you look at the thread titled "Cheap CF Drive Link + How-to" there's a drive you can order from there and there's instructions on how to install it. i bought and installed the same drive and its so dope. a lot of others have done the same.
