Question about using all of the manuals

How do they all interact? I printed out the jjos rev.3 and that's cool just a bit hard to understand.
i also printed out the japanese jenius one which is a lot more helpful, AND the original akai mpc 1000 manual.
i've been trying to make sense of them all but it's a lot of info to digest.
i wonder if there's a step by step guide available for making a simple generic track start to finish.

for example: making loops and stringing them together, adding melodic elements etc, and doing an arrangement,
so i can get a handle on the basics before going deeper into the creative process.

also, one other question about sample playback.
i loaded a bunch of large samples from my mac onto the mpc and they won't play. i can play some of the
smaller one shot drums, but no long pad samples. why is this? do i need more ram?
i only have 32 mb at this time, but have the 128 mb card on the way. i assume this will fix the problem,
but i see a bunch of stuff in the manuals about recording directly into the mpc, so i'm wondering if i can
in fact just drag everything into the mpc.

The samples must be 44.1khz and 16bit, anything else the MPC cannot load. Your MPC may also only have 16mb of memory (and not the 128mb upgrade) which could cause you to not be able to load some samples. If you ordered a 128mb compact flash card (which is what it sounded like from your post), this will not help you load larger samples.

buy the tutorial from this site. Very helpful in getting the basics down and how you create a track from start to finish. I think it's like $40, but IMO worth it. This coming from someone with very little audio production experience.

I installed the 128 internal ram and that works, I still only have a 32mb CF card though.
I am thinking that should be ok if I load stuff via usb from my mac to the mpc.

Do I need to get a bigger CF card like a 128 to load big samples (over 1 mb)?

compact flash cards are pretty cheap... I got a brand new Sandisk Ultra II CF card (2GB) for like $12 on newegg.com.

there is no reason not to max out to 1 or 2gb card.

2 gig cards are the shiznittle bang! I used to use 512mb and filled them up way too quickly...now I can't wait til I get my hd.

Whether or not you have JJ installed on your MPC, the original akai manual is still essential and will give you a good understanding of the fundamentals in your MPC 1000. It is not well written, but well enough to get to grips with things you are stuck on.

JJ's own manual is terrible, but as soon as you start playing around with things, everything will drop into place.

Stan's manual does hardly ever point out which features are specific to OS1 and OS2, which can be confusing. I have not checked if he has updated it lately, but it must be a tough job to keep up.

It takes time to get to grips with everything in the MPC's but give it time and explore. You learn by doing, there is no other way.

Indeed it is hard to keep up. But as far as presentation, readability and description goes, I think this manual is unsurpassed still, although OS 2 is not covered as a whole yet... but I am working on a new concept to cover OS free, OS1, OS2 and OS2XL in the next and final release...

You're doing a fantastic job, Stan. That is a pretty major undertaking you embarking on.
