It depends what you start with:

If I use a stereo sample as my main sample, then I will want to built mono sounds around that sample. The stereo field (or room in which the sample is set) is fixed.

I never have problems with polyphony because when I like a layered sound, I re-sample it and save it within a new program, if you want to keep the original, just keep that program in the background and switch off the tracks for that program, just use the track that uses the bounced sample, of course you might need several bounced samples if you all kind of shit on it. If you have a hard drive in your 1000, you can save as many projects/folders/program variations etc. So starting from the same sound, I can have a program with distortion, with bounced layers, with LFO's etc. Those programs come in handy when starting new projects, as your palette is widened.

BTW, you could buy another 1000 and run two with the same spex in parallel, run more FX, more polyphony, more outputs etc for less money than forking out for a 5000 or so, no? I would prefer that...

I agree. It would be silly to spend so much money for the sake of polyphony. You could just get an upgraded S5000 and have a fully blown sampler to boot! (No pun, promise!) You could expand those to 128 voices.

But the more voices you use, the more you throw into the mix, and the more you throw into the mix, the harder it will be to balance it all. It's good to keep things simple.

Dual 1k's would be pretty dope.

Yeah got almost enough parts here to put a non functional 1k together here. Some day when I see a good deal I might pick up another one, but I got my first one new and paid a decent amount. Got a good deal, but nothing like the $400 you see sometimes on ebay.

I keep meaning to ask why you've sanded your case down to the metal in pics/vids you've posted. Memorized everything and don't care, or going for the rugged look?

here is how i never get in polyphony-trouble:

* check every sample before you work with it. lots of free samples from the web are stereo even if it's just a mono-wav on both sides. convert it to mono.

* check if the sample is fake stereo (i.e. just a simple reverb on it). convert it to mono, add the reverb in you daw or use the internal chorus.

* as said before, set all samples to 'mono', i hardy use poly samples.

* pimp you mono samples (espacially hihats, shakers etc) with the internal chorus

* layer then pan similar samples! well, this doesn't really help reducing polyphony but you can create some great wide samples.

I did the same, I thought the 1000 looks kinda like a toy, so I sanded it down and sprayed it matt white.
I much prefer working on it now because it looks much more interesting. Your hands remember all the short cuts etc anyway, so you don't need any words on it!

Probably a good point... when it's too dark to see the letters I still know where most of my favorite functions are.

now we only have to switch off the display!

I'm bumping this because i've recently pulled the MPC out of a 2 year hibernation and have run into this issue twice. I was seriously getting pissed off and could not remember what the hell i was doing wrong. I had checked all the poly/mono/mute group settings 100 times and kept thinking i had accidentally recorded some sort of program change or mute track live on accident and couldn't figure out where the little bastard was hidden.

Through the wonderful "search" feature on MPC forums i was able to regain my sanity!
