Whats the best way to tell

Its the lows thats im having problems with, my highs always come out crisp and clean, but the bassline or the bass drum most of the time comes out to loud, it doesn't sit in the mix very well......

outside the phones.....just on your monitors....i have fully clsoed headphones so just got into the habit of saying inside for phones on and outside when my phones are off....confusing eh?

yup a good tip from mrmike.....get the tune your comparing to..turn it right down so its just audible...what elements can you hear? the snare? the bass drum? when you turn yours down can you here those same elements? are they louder/quieter?

Thas what i'm sayin.... ur highs are gonna be cool... but ur lows aren't, because ur lows are actually louder than u think they are when ur listening to them through ur monitors.....

when you play a commercial cd in yo car, the kick ain't too loud.
Your mix should sound good everywhere. use a cd for comparative
listening. gives you something to shoot for. I have the same problem

I just finished mixing down this song consisting of 14 tracks im about to burn it to a disc and take outside to my car...........Im waisting money and disc.............being that when I finish with a beat I quickly burn it to a disc to see if it sounds right................One beat on a whole disc man!

I thought you don't have to "finish" the burning session everytime you burn something... So that you can burn a beat into a cd, then come back later and burn another beat into the same cd - i.e "continue the session".

Yeah you can do that but it won't play in a conventional cd player, so I have to finalize it to get it to play on a regular cd player........Thats what killing me, the finalizing, it would be nice to not finalize a cd just to here one beat on it...
