audio technica 4050s and similar sounding mics

i was looking at buying a microphone pretty soon, the at 4050 is the one that i really want but the price tag is kinda steep at 600 dollars.

does anyone know any mics that sound similar in a little lower price range?
i was looking at the dynamic range/frequency chart thingis for the 4050s and i saw that there was about a 2 db boost at 9 to 11 khz and a .5 ish db boost at around 5 and 6k. there is also a roll of at 100 hz and it drops about 12 db until it reaches 20 hz.

theese specs are all in the cardioid pattern, and that is the one that i would be using most.

theres also a switch to make a more dramatic roll of at around 80 hz and i usually use that when im recording vocals into a 4050 to prevent some proximity effect and boomyness.

could anyone point me to some more cost effective microphones with similar frequency reproductions of the 4050s?


any one ever used them side by side with another mic and liked the result?

I'm a Audio Technica kat. That's the only mic I've had for the past decade or so. Although I still have my eyes set on the 4050, I'm doing just fine using an original 4033a & a 3035.

They've always made my vocals & acoustic instuments sound good. I've also had an AKG back in the day, but AT won me over.

i been usin a "Behringer B-2 Pro" and a "Audio-Technica AT2020"but not the usb 2020 !......and actually i like usin the AT2020 more then the B2 ( and that damn behringer was more expensive then the 2020, them assholes )

But I am a fan of A.T. Products , the 2020 is real nice. hell of alot cheaper than 600 bux too !

i would stay away from the b2. i have one and it doesnt compare to my guys rode ntk. the b2 loses a lot of the sound thats put into it. im looking to get the 4050 too. if i were you, i would just save that dough and cop that first. everything that i read says that its a must have in your mic cabinet. im getting that one first for a go to mic.

yeah, i think im proably best off saving to get a 4050, but the 2035 looks pretty nice too, and the frequency response chart looks similar to the 4050 one, i might rent that one and test it out compared to the 4050 before i make my decision.

They have recently reissued the AT 4033.....It's the best of the lot IMO...

i've recorded all of the vocals for artists I've worked with through my AT3035 using various preamps . Adding some compression and EQ I have never been displeased.

do you really need the pad and all the polar patterns?

I got a AT 3035, it works well... maybe not as nice as the 4000 series, but it's got a pad and rumble filter, and thats good enough for me... I only really need a cardioid pattern, so its a good buy in the ,$150 price range.. check out some stuff by Studio Projects and Sterling Audio.

ill check some of that sterling audio out, and the 4033, i want a mic for vocals right now, but i think in the future i would want the other polar patterns for recording acoustic guitars, so i might just have to save up and get the 4050 in the end, thanks for all the input everyone.

The 4050 is a fantastic mic, I'd suggest trying to find a used one on ebay or saving up. Akg 414 is teh closest mic to my ears(or should I say the 4050 is close to the 414). I'd look for a 414 used as well if you like the 4050 sound.

buy a 4047. is a wonderful mic, much better than 4050. i haven't had a 4050, i had a 4040. they are all three very beautyful. i've heard various shootout of these mics, also the one on the audiotechnica site.. i think the 4040 and 4050 are very similar, probably the difference is just the figure 8 and omni features..

the 4047 is less bright, but in a way that gives you more feeling and is more expressive, and cuts exactly the S sound in most of voices, but keeping the breathing effect...

i've bought mine searching in amazon i don't remember the name of the store.. at the end is arrived packed from musician and advocate.. but the name was another.. like pro discounter.. if i remember well...

btw search for the best price and you'll find it.. i've payed it 476 with shipping to italy and 438 without...so if you are in usa you will pay something like 450... 150 dollars less than the 4050

to me 4040 and 4050 are a bit strange on the highs.. btw i really liked also the 4040 and you can find it cheap on ebay.. i've payed mine 199 from musician advocate with a "best offer" is a very natural mic, but extremely detailed, i've found the shootout on the at site corresponding to the real thing... in fact i prefer the 4047 in all the at 40 line..
