I meant multiple additional OS's in the way that we now have the choice between JJ OS1, OS2, and OS2XL, all of which are current and available for purchase.

I wasn't referring to the "Roll your Own JJ OS" concept, and I agree with you-- That idea seems over the top!

Since you are able to try before you buy, I don't see how this is extortionate. You decide if you like the price or not, and if the functions you get are worth the money.

One thing about small, non-corporate "businesses" like this is that they tend to be much more customer driven. If you want to have any real influence over Akai's decisions, you need to buy a significant amount of stocks in them. As an end user you are not on top of the food chain. In JJ's case it is much more immediate than that, as he answers to nobody but us (I imagine).

Which is nice.

Come to think of it, I would like to see a more purpose-built dual boot system in the MPC. You could have one OS that is more geared towards sound creation, with a limited sequencer and advanced chopping and trim functions. The other OS is more for live performance/fast tracking with live looping capabilities if possible, and more focus on sequencer editing, etc. A tough one in practice, but as it stands there are many overlaps in the two operating systems. Not counting the new OS2xl, which I haven't looked too deeply into yet.

Just an idea.

Would a new "Live Performances Only" MPC be a good idea then? Something you could dump samples/sequences etc into from your regular - at home MPC -, with a powerful processor (for once).

Different layout, larger screen, thinner chassis so more lightweight etc??? Stripped down OS with no editing functionality, no sampling, but just a sequencer (you'd do all your sampling and editing etc on your other MPC) and a couple of other basic functions for gettin your naughty on in front of an audience.....?

Anyway, just a crazy idea. I've had 4 coffees in the last hour and I feel a bit wired.

it's my dream to someday be onboard with a serious project like that.
in my current state though i wouldn't respond well to corporate pressures that are bound to be inherent to hardware development purely because prduction costs so much money. that's why i'm far more likely to be involved in the software side of things...and continue to built midi controller prototypes

i wish i could program and i wish i knew more about electronics. in the meantime, all i am is just a really nutty end user

a multi boot os system would only be good if the basics like programs were fully compatible across the line of operating systems. doesnt really work if you build a pgm in os1 and then cant load it into os2.

I really think that this is exactly what will happen... Akai has to see what is going on, with the 5k having so many issues. By the time JJ really blew up, the 5k must have been waiting in the wings. I really think that if they are smart, they will let JJ continue taking the 1k and 2500 as far as he can. Then hiring him to write an open operating system for a new line of Mp. One that works much as this one does now. Allowing requests for options to be added, and several OS options for one machine, or even one line of machines. This could change the entire game, by really allowing customers to customize their own instruments. We may even see menus, where we choose from a list, the exact specafications we want from a pre prepared list of options... Damn I should pattend this... With JJ on board, as well as Nym of course, there would already be a loyal following - something Akai desperately needs to reach and make amends with. Remember me boys!

Oh... One last point. I am a long time Roland fan. JJ sold me on the 1k. Every company would have to fall in line... Now that we see what is (Oh forget it, you see what I'm saying...)

You could have the option of saving your programs as OS1 or 2 compatible, at least in the sound design OS2, then port it over to the sequencing OS1. Probably not easy in practice but a nice dream...
