card vs. hardrive

hey guys. yep, new guy question.

about the flash card memory-- can you 'stream' samples/audio directly from the card? or do you have to transfer the data from the card to the mpc hard drive?

about the hard drive-- i'm looking to buy the mpc100. I'm going to want to install either the 40 or 80 gig hard drive. on the ebay auction page for a hard drive it says:

"This hard drive slides into the AKAI HDM-10 hard drive mounting kit, which should be included inside your sampler. This auction is for the bare hard drive only, and does not include any additional mounting hardware or caddy."

Would i need to also buy additional mounting hardware or caddy?

No streaming, it has to be loaded And yes you need the kit.

Ive heard mixed things about the HD kit coming with the MPC. I bought my 1k maxxed out brand new. either way heres the kit

hard drive is optional, you are loading from card into memory, so you don't even need one if space isn't an issue

The only differences in the HD and the card is the option to remove the card easily, and the amount of space on the card is much less than a HD.....


The MPC uses them both in the same way.

don't feel the need to get a hardrive at first. a 2gig card will hold a lot of samples and projects.

i think that's right.

I make lots of beats and can tell you that I have never filled a 2GB card up.
Not to mention just back your projects up on your hard drive when you are done and remove them off your 2GB card.

This also might sound weird, but I recommend a 2GB card, because it limits your options somewhat compared to a hard drive. I have 30GB of samples and drum samples I have gathered over the last ten years and honestly when I was making beats on a computer it took me hours to find drums...

Limiting your choices is one of the best things you can do for your workflow I think.
It makes you be creative and narrow down your selections of samples to your best stuff.

yeah, i've had my 1000 for a year, and have only filled one quarter of my 2g card.

i totally agree that limitations are a good thing.

my main concern was/is gigabytes for live performance. how quick does the MPC load audio/song data from the CF Card/Harddrive?

thats mainly going to be determined by the size of the file its loading. If I had to guess tho I would say the card is faster.

Just set up your performance in a way that you can load all the songs at once. Some MPCs with OS2 have been known to work flawlessly with 8-16GB cards too.....

Load all your songs before performance and just switch through them the whole time.
