ok, heres my dilemma...
i sample from my tech 1200's, out to vestax pmc-06 out to yamaha mg12 mixer. i use the rca 'tape out' of the yamaha into the mpc2kxl sample input.
the vestax has 'trim' (gain), the individual channel strip/fader and 'master volume'. i get the levels to clip using the gain and then bring them down slowly until i get a signal im satisfied with, all while the channel strip/fader is maxed out at 10.
the 'tape out' of the yamaha bypasses the master stereo out and only outputs the signal from whichever channel is turned on. i keep the fader at unity gain and adjust the gain until i clip, then slowly bring it to a signal im comfortable with.
now at this point, the level is overwhelmingly loud and i have to set the 'record gain' on the mpc to about 11 oclock/maybe about 40% so i wont clip while sampling.
so, if that makes sense, my question is..am i doing something wrong? if i sample with the 'record gain' at about 40% of its capacity, will that have any negative impacts on the quality of the samples? is there any reason i shouldnt be sampling like this?
if ur still reading this, i appreciate u not closing this thread and moving on to the next one. i confused myself typing it, i imagine its kinda confusing to read.
anyway, any thoughts would be cool.
