just starting to dig - any tips for me?

yo peeps!

i'm just about to get me a mpc (500 that is) and for that i want to hold it down and go out diggin!
and as you may notice (keep the topics name in mind) i am absolutely new to this digging game.
i have no digging skills yet, i just bought me the vinyls that sounded good for me but not with beat making ambitions in mind. so it was not real digging, just buying until now.

if you got any tips for me, id really appreciate that.
just what to keep my eyes on, how to get smooth started in the digging scene.

please keep in mind: just digging and sampling / beat making is new territory for me. i'm not a complete new one on the hip hop scene.

as far as digging goes for me i look for record labels, artist, i look at what producers have sampled and build on that. i dig for breaks i remember from when i used to dj.i may listen to an oldies station and here something i like and get that record. theres really no list of how to dig, you just have to dig. hopefully that makes sense.

If you were buying vinyl and like music already, it's no different. Now just add your own touch to things you like.

"Those violins sound nice"
"I like this breakdown"
"Cool Bassline". Instead of thinking things like this it becomes "that's a sample"

You were already listening. Now just listen harder, learn to listen more, get creative, buy a bunch of records, and once you've bought a few crates of records you'll know what to look for more than anybody can tell you. Just go through some records and buy more that have similarities to the ones you like. You're going to mess up at first, but you always learn from mistakes. Just dig in.

my plan is to dig the allready sampled classic stuff like isley brothers - footsteps in the dark, jean jaques perrey - e.v.a. (just to name 2) and then try to get funky with them.
also to extract some drums and basslines from allready famous stuff.

the next level would be to dig less known (to unknown) stuff and get funky with that.


does this sound like a solid plan to you?

Thats how I started diggin' I would check the credits on records to see where the producer sampled it from and went out hunting. I was blessed to have a father who was a sanitation-man and he would bring home stacks of vinyl that ppl threw away because either a family member that collected them died or they moved on to cds. And to this day I still look in ppl's trash for records. But remember that a true producer can take any record and flip it, corny or dope. ''Use what ya got to get whatcha want.''

I went through alot of trials and errors when I first started digging. Then as I became famaliar with record labels, and artists you will start to find your niche and the sounds you are looking for. You build off of that as you start to listen more and more. If you find something that you like on a record take note of the artist, the record label, and the year. So next time when you're out digging you'll have something to work with. The internet can be your best friend.

I in the other hand look for albums no one has ever used or the not so common ones. I also take my portable Turntable with me to listen to the albums.

3. DONT buy just for sampling BUy cause YOU LIKE THE MUSIC or artist,research the forum here there's tons of info TRUST THAT.

4.records build up fast, so have a place to store them.

5.buying from the dollar bins you get what you paid for,learn to dig and find the music you like ,a price doesnt matter if you know what your after.


have a good time and hope you can live on top ramen,cause once you get bit by the bug watch out,you wont want to buy anything else but VINYL. and yes you can dig on line, but to find the best deals you have to do the footwoot and get out to the store so you can compare what your buying online.

what eddie said....but 4 real buy music you wanna listen to, not just music to sample

yes i agree with the last 2 post i have a gang of stuff that really is to cluttered with vocals or stuff i just dont feel like sampling...(yet at least) that i just chill out to!

but as far as begining buy a hand full of albums tak them home and make them work!!! it will teach you to be creative! try not using any effects and just take little snippets here and there... no need to sample a min long loop and jus chop it up by hitting 16 zones and slice... look for what you wanna chop not just chopping random stuff and playing around with it until it works...

at least that smy 2 sense... i like sounds not chops
of course i have 26.2 seconds of sample time too

have fun make your own sound and then build from there but DRUMS you need dope drums to carry any track!!! thats the hip hop sound its all in the DRUMSSS!!! and i mean real drums not any premade sine wave drums!!!
