change speed of sound/sequence w/o affecting its pitch...

hi guys...

i wanted to know if...say i have sample that i assigned to a pad (which i will later eventually use in a sequence). now, i wanted to know if i can make it slower or faster if i needed to without affecting its pitch. i'm in a band and i throw in the electronics. sometimes we may decide to play a song faster, or maybe a little slower, so i just wanna know if i can change the speed quickly and easily to adjust to what we're feeling that particular day...ya know?

btw...i have an MPC2000XL.

hmmm....the only way to change it without effecting the pitch is timestretch and as you know it takes a few seconds. Maybe, you could stretch the sample to varying bpm's that you know will be close to that of the song. Then assign them to however many pads in order from slower to faster. It will definitely take some practice though. I've never tried this but it's a good question.

You are wanting to do something that you can really only do well with computer software like Ableton Live.

What sort of material are you working with? If it is drumloops you could try cutting each bar neatly into 16ths......the way computer beat-slicing programs like ReCycle & PhatMatik do. Assign each slice to a pad & make a simple sequence so you are re-playing the original loop ( or variations of it ) from the slices. You should be able to speed this up or slow it down a fair amount with it still sounding right. You can try cutting up musical phrases like this too.


Slider's suggestion is good, although even with just three different tempos of one sample that is three times the amount of zip space, loading time & MPC RAM space.

Can't you just be the one who sets the tempo for the rest of the band?
