I would never just up a mpc either but we have to realize it is what it is.

Controller=Pads and Knobs

Sequencer=speaks for itself as one of the best and most user friendly in the world

Sampler=In the 4k`s case full feature for multisampling and drum/Phrase keygroups.

But the third party libraries for the MPC series is limited and hard to fine as the software sampler revolution killed off alot of the supply for it. The 4k multi sample stock sound CD and the basic 5k drum kits and phrase loop stock CD is great also, but sound libraries for software are always updated and easy to buy and layer for that matter.
multsample

Hence I use the best of both world get the greatest multsamples and the my favorite workstation for controller and sequencing..

But as long as MPCs use .wav files, then there is an endless supply of sample libraries available. Plus there are plenty of software solutions for converting sample formats. I am still looking for a software sampler that I actually enjoy using. I will probably take a look a Emu's X3 or Motu's Mach 5V2.

MPC4000 is the shit.... MPC5000 is no comp. Close this thread... Not even a good comparison...

I`m talking multisample libraries not one shots and phrases a big difference unless you want to map a multilayered grand piano with different velocity notes going on over 88 keys and of course you understand that 40GB isn`t going to fit in 512MB of ram. Plus layer that with Vienna strings the same way. I`m talking about beyond drums. I have the chicken system translater too but I decide to keep it simple and keep it all in a box with Kontakt and my other soft samplers including EXS running quite well on a Mac.

Well....this is exactly what I have been talking about for years. If you marry an MPC 2500 or 5000 with a software sampler, you have everything you need. Because as you put it..there is no way a 192 or 512MB sampler can compete with a sampler that runs GBs of samples.

Chatting with you has just convinced me to give software samplers a try. But instead of installing the ones I currently have....I am thinking about dropping $2K on one of those Receptor modules..which are basically computers with the plugins already installed and authorized.....but then again...Namm is coming :?

It is true like you said a marriage of any mpc with a software sampler is everything you need. It is all about the samples and how you can manipulate them too.

Is that receptor a synth module it doesn`t say how to add third party samples to them???

If I had 2k to spend on an upgrade, I'd wait for NAMM too- Even if there's an improvement made on something you're interested in and don't go with the new version it could make the current ones cheaper by a bit.

The Receptor I was looking at was loaded with Native Instrument samplers, and synths. It has a ethernet port on the back which I assume is wear you can transfer your sample libraries. I will have to look more into it. I really do like the concept. I wish a company like Roland or Yamaha would do something similar to their next sound modules. I could imagine a Fantom G rack with 2GB of ram, 500 GB hard drive, expansion slots for ARX and SRX cards, and a VGA monitor and mouse.

I don't like units like this, because the are only Windows Only platforms. Especially the whole E-mu line. That's the reason I keep all of the E-mu sound modules. But , that's their lost if they don't choose to support Mac. I would love to get a Miko, but again it PC based.

I've got around 500 akai samplecdroms that can be loaded in the 4k
alot of them with great multi samples

I've been hearing of these guys for the last couple of years, but maybe 'cause of the ability to put together an extremely fast machine yourself, along with an enormous amount of vsti's, it hasn't caught on so well.

I don't doubt that they are great multi-samples. But when you compare those multisamples with the sounds that are included with software-based samplers.....it is not even close. 64 MB piano is not competing with a 3 GB piano.

Caught on so well with the bedroom producers? Probably not....they cost at least $2000. Those machines are basically just computers built for a specific function. If they are stable OS-wise, it looks very impressive. But I wish a company comes out a build a ROMpler that is as powerful...if that is even possible.

that 64 mb (or even 8 MB) Piano will have a certain sound/grittyness that you wont be able to get out of those uncharacteristic multigig sounds.
ones "shitty" sounds might be anothers Hitsound.
It's all about flavor.

Those same 64 MB piano's can be loaded into the same sampler that supports multigig sounds.

Honestly I have use the sound library
that came with my 4k along with Hollow Suns
and others. And they sound great but my software
libraries sound fanstatic and layering synths, strings and
others is a great ease and wonderful thing.

I still sound design great unique sounds
with the 4k just my software has better horns, ha ha 8)
